Is stretch thread necessary when sewing jersey?

Are you talking about elastic thread or woolly nylon?

Usually when I sew jersey I use plain 'ole cotton thread (or poly cotton thread).  Sometimes when I sew using my serger, I'll use a woolly nylon - it has some stretch to it and 'puffs' up nicely around the edges. You can also use it in your bobbin on your regular sewing machine - it works nicely when twin needle sewing in keeping your seam stretchy.

I've found using a zig-zag stitch with normal all-purpose thread keepps the seams stretchy. I found out by reading my machine's manual recently that there are several stretchy stitches it does, so you might check your manual. If you don't have it any more you may be able to find it online doing a search.
