So I started with this, which looks like a perfectly fine shirt, but there were sweat stains under the arms Shocked (eew!) which meant it couldn't be worn as a shirt anymore.....

So I decided to turn it into a waistcoat.  I intended to keep the pockets on it, but when I cut the sleeves off I had major pookling action at my boobs going on  Angry, like so

So the pockets had to go as I couldn't put darts in when they were there.  Anyone else wish they had slightly smaller boobs sometimes, just to make the sewing easier?!

And this is what I ended up with!

(I still need to fix one of the darts a bit)

What do you think?  I'm quite chuffed.  It's the first thing I've reconned that I'll actually wear Smiley

You could still add the pockets back near the bottom points if you wanted. Personally I love your project it is adorable!

You should be quite chuffed, whatever that means. It is a very flattering fit.

That is pretty darn awesome! I have fabric sitting around for a vest but I just won't get around to it because I don't have a pattern. However, seeing what you've done kinda makes me want to go to a thrift store and get a button up to recon!

SO lovely.
I think it worked out pretty well that the pockets made it look funny, because the new shape is SO flattering, much more so than if you hadn't had to put darts.

Well done!!

Thanks everyone!!

I always forget that English is different in different places....  'Chuffed' is a British word for proud.

I think it worked out so well as the shirt is made from quite thick, stretchy material (and it fitted well to begin with).  I'll definitely be looking out for similar shirts in charity shops from now on Smiley

As for how I did it, I literally cut it into roughly the shape I wanted and pinned and cut and pinned and cut til it looked how I wanted and then sewed it up!  Grin

Thank You! I think you may have just solved the problem I was having with my t-shirt to vest recon. I'm having the same boob area problem so I'm going to try what you did and see if it works.

Nice job on your vest. It looks really nice. Smiley
