I had a hard time with snaps, also.  I used a hammer, poked and prodded, but the snaps never seem to be set in place well enough to actually use as a closure.  thanks.  catdaddytn

Thanks for this.  I have a horrible time doing snaps!  I have ruined two wallets trying to apply snaps using the cheap tools that came with the snaps.

So I just bought some of those snaps that have a pearl like finish on the top part and I was wondering, will this be okay for those? I don't want to break the top if I hammer it.

Thanks for the idea of using a pen to push over the prongs. If anyone still has trouble putting snaps on,I recommend the snap setter on this website http://www.snapsource.com/store/products.php?categoryName=The%20SnapSetter&categoryParentName=Attaching%20Tools It works really well. I use it with a regular hammer. I'm planning on ordering more colors soon.

Just as an aside... My momma uses baby snaps for snaps on my various closures (she made me an mp3 holder and a cellphone case) they're good cuz you can sew them on (multiple times, if you're like me and do it wrong the first 3 times) and better for starting out if you're unsure about the other snaps. Cool
