OK, my trusty Craftster pals....I need your collective brains and crafty powers to help me!

I bought a little address book at the Dollar Store to modify and use at my sister's 50th birthday party as a guest / memory book.

It has a hard cover and a multiple ring binder (like a traditional 3 ring binder) so I can remove the pages.
The inside....(with the pages that came with it)

The outside....(soon to be recovered, but it's still pretty cute so I had to show it!)

I plan on recovering the book with paper that matches the theme of the party (Tiki Hut/Luau - lame, I know), but I'm at loss as to what to include on the new pages to make for the book!

Here's what I would like to do: Have a place for each guest to sign their names and then a place for them to write something (hopefully nice) about my sister.  But what do I call that section? Favorite memory of the birthday girl? Something funny?

Help! We're trying to keep this party on the light side and forego the traditional black balloons over the hill route.  She's had a pretty difficult time lately and we just want her to have fun!

Any ideas or suggestions will be soooooooo greatly appreciated!!! Thanks bunches!!!

On pages framed with tiki gods, palm trees, monkeys, etc... leave the center (large enough space for writing) of each page open and call it "Tiki Tales" or something that includes your sister's name- like "Patti's Place" or whatever. Have a few friends, or family members, you have given instructions to start the book off with their recollections so the rest of the guests have an idea of what to put in the book. Include some captioned photos from her past and she'll love the results I am sure.

If you give the pages to the participants ahead of time they can glue pics or write stories or draw pics. One page for each person or family. Then they can enjoy the party rather than worry about what to write. Have lots of extra sheets at the party just in case. I would use card stock. You could preprint something like the previous suggestion to start them off.

Thanks for the suggestion! I have been collecting tiki/tropical photoshop brushes to do that very thing! I think it will be a nice momento and I know she will love it.  I was thinking of using these beauties by crafty_dame as inspiration:

This was a last minute thing, so no time to distribute before the party!  I've gotta churn that thing out by Friday, so I'd better get crack-a-lackin'!

I'll post the end result. Thanks again for the help and use of your brain powers! Wish me luck....

OK - What I decided to do was to print cards that party guests could fill out while milling about. The completed cards go in a very cute wicker/rattan box that I found for cheap.  After the party, I plan on assembling the cards plus pictures from the party into a memory book for my sister.  It will fit inside the box, so she can display it and it won't scream "BIRTHDAY PARTY".  Here's what the cards look like - they're approx. 8 x 5.

The cards....

I did them in Photoshop - and I'm still working all that business out! I'm not really satisfied with the top section.

Suggestions on what I can do to make them not quite so vanilla would be great!

Thanks!

Are you old enough to remember Hawaii 5-0?
At some point you could add some color markers or glitter stuff. Maybe have some supplies sitting on the table for the adults to play?
How about having them tell their story at the party? Take their pic with her while they tell their story. Kinda like a roast of the birthday girl. Or a luau? I started to say pig roast but decided that might come off wrong...
She is one very lucky sister. In case she didn't know that.

You could always put a saucy hula girl pinup on the pages or a little graphic of greg brady with the cursed tiki. Personally I like the scene on the surf board.

Yes, I am indeed old enough to remember that! I was little bitty at the time, but I would put on my bitsy bathing suit, get a blanket and lie in front of the TV when it came on! Yes, I was a dork then - still a dork now!

My sister's had a rough time lately, so I decided to spare her the black balloons treatment and keep things light.  The theme is Tiki/Luau - hence the little tiki heads on the cards. We have a tropical back drop, so we (and by we, I totally mean ME!) will be taking real pictures along with the candids. I'm sure she'll get roasted some anyway - she's got some rowdy friends!

I can probably spice things up a bit when I put the book together.  I've got some colorful papers and with all the decorations and leis, the pics will have alot of color, too.

Thanks for your input. Your comments made my day! Feel free to give me more suggestions!

OMG - I love the Greg Brady thing! My sister would crap her pants if I reminded her about that darned cursed tiki! The hula girl is a good idea....I'll see what I can find! Thanks for your help!

If you have a pic of you in your swimsuit and all that would be fun.
I forgot about the needed lightness...
If you wanted to play a game you could have like a Hawaiian version of pin the tail on the donkey. If there are kids there you could have a pinata.

It sounds like you are going to have a great party and great fun. Hope to see some of the scrapbook.
I don't remember the cursed tiki. It sounds like fun. Maybe you could give her one to destroy. Symbolic of getting past the rough time she's been through.

I added a pinup girl at the bottom. What do you think? Should I axe the tiki heads at the top?

Thanks! I've been obsessing over these...it's amazing I haven't developed an ulcer!

Ha ha! I just force fed her...hopefully she won't upchuck after gaining 15 lbs in about 2 seconds!

Hmmmm.....pineapples are a possibility. I faded the tikis and they looked better. Not sure if I'll keep 'em or not.  I'm trying to break my OCD habit of always doing things in 2's!

THANKS for all the input! You guys are the awesomest!

sactownsue: No knives  - I just need a cursor. With photoshop, all things are possible!

I will definitely send your birthday wishes along! And totally give you all the creative creds! I really do appreciate your feedback - you will never know how much!

The party's Saturday, so I don't have much time left.  I'm going to have the cards printed Friday at Staples. Yay!

Her best childhood friend and I have been grilling her about what she wanted for her birthday, and she's the type of person who will never tell you...I finally cracked her and she said she wanted to ride a Segway before she died. As it turns out, they give Segway tours of downtown Atlanta and that's what she's getting. I hope she doesn't kill herself on it - or me! Neither one of us are known for our coordination abilities...

PS - I love your bunny!

I don't really need the cred. Glad I could help. It was fun.

Segway! cool!!! I saw on TV they do that in SanFrancisco as well. That should be so much fun! I'm so excited for you guys! Gotta get pics of that too.

PS Thanks. I love my bunnies too. I have three house buns. Buffy's my youngest. He's four.

OK bedtime. Gonna leave you and your OCD and ulcer for tonite. Looks like you are good to go. May the birthday fairies and angels be with you.

Well, the party has come and gone. Thank goodness.

My sister's best friend and I busted our butts!  Well, really we spent alot of time gossiping...which led to us having to bust it at the end!  The guests started arriving 45 minutes before the party was to start - uh, can you say crap-ola!

My brother-in-law got the wrong person to make the birthday cakes - oops!

The memory cards that I obsessed over - and drove everyone on craftster crazy with - didn't really go over.  Everybody enjoyed looking at them, and talking about how cute they were and reading what others wrote, but weren't really into filling them out.  Probably because their idea of a party is just getting drunk.  Not very easy to write when you can't hold the pen.  I ended up not making an actual book, I just bought a rattan wicker box for her to keep the cards in. Good thing, 'cause she wasn't going to give them back to me to tinker with!

I could go on with a list of catastrophies, but I won't bore you! The most important thing was that my sister was surprised (which is sooooo not easy to do) and she had a really, really good time. I'm just happy that it's over!

Memorial Day weekend, she's getting her big present - a girly weekend in Atlanta with a segway tour of downtown. So, yay!

Thanks to everyone for their input...you're all the best!!

sactownsue:   Awww. You're the sweetest!

Actually, today is my birthday! The big 3-8. It's been good so far. I slept really, really late - sleep is awesome! (I recently discovered the magic of earplugs...highly recommended!)

My hubby bought me a new purse that I had been lusting after and we are going to my *free on your birthday* (we are such losers!) dinner at my favorite italian restaurant.

Ooooh, and the bestest present ever - we're going to see Duran Duran on May 17! Yay! My husband surprised me with tickets waaaay back in 2004.  Shortly after he got the tickets, I became the primary caregiver for my mom who had lung cancer. So I couldn't go. Had to give the tickets away - at least I got a t-shirt! If it weren't for Duran Duran, I wouldn't have made it to 38.

I have some mystery gift waiting for me from my sister. I have no idea what it could possibly be.

Here we are at her party: I'm the brownie, she's the blondie. (We don't really look alike - same oven, different bakers.)

We are planning the Segway trip for Memorial Day weekend.  It should be fun.  There will be incriminating photos - I'm sure of it.

Thanks for thinking of me! It made my day!

Actually, today is my birthday! The big 3-8. It's been good so far. I slept really, really late - sleep is awesome! (I recently discovered the magic of earplugs...highly recommended!)
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!I'm older than your sis. Sleep is necessary!!! I don't need earplugs anymore, I'm half deaf.

So sad... She was lucky to have you. That must have been rough. I'm sure she appreciated it.

I have some mystery gift waiting for me from my sister. I have no idea what it could possibly be.
Mmmm.... Stand back when you open it! Just in case...

Ha ha! My husband is a couple years older than my sister - she's 12 years older than me, he's 14 years older than me.  Our 13th anniversary is the end of this month.  He snores something awful and actually got a procedure done a few years ago to help with it.  It helped for a while, but now it's back. I have a difficult time sleeping anyway, so the snoring was adding to the problem. Hello, ear plugs. The downside is that I can't hear anything while wearing them!

Funny you mention the matching haircuts. I had actually gone to my sister's stylist about 2 days before to fix a horrendous haircut I got about 2 weeks earlier, which was to fix the first in the series of bad haircuts I got about 2 weeks before that!  My hair was about shoulder length before all that started....ugh! Luckily, it grows fast. That's our family talent. We grow hair.

I WIST I had all these super cool things!

See you in the clouds, sweet little Jackson.
