That shoes are great to weave something in. (in don't know if that's good English) You already have a grid. If you use ribbon to make the shoe closed and a bowl on the top and the back of the shoe. (I hope my image is clear enough to explaine)

i agree on weaving something through the shoes... or else "reverse-appliqu"(??) maybe with a really strong glue, some fabric behind each square.*

on the "america" shirt, i agree about scrapping the back, especially because you have a distracting grammar issue going on as well.  (it's --> its)

why not something more subtle(?!) like cutting out the front image, stenciling something over it, like "ALMOST" (i hope this would read "i almost <3 america"), and let people ask you why.  oh yeah and you could then appliqu this panel onto another shirt maybe the same color as you used for the stencil of ALMOST.

Edit:
*PS: you could just line the entire grid area with one piece of fabric, it would be easier.

On the t-shirt:

First decide what new shape you are going to give your T-shirt. Here some suggestions I found. Youll decide depending on your style. There are lots of ideas in the net

http://www.getcrafty.com/pictures.php?user=dandee&album=Dandee+Original+Designs&picture=7094

http://www.getcrafty.com/blogs.php?user=yardenxanthe&entry=7872
http://www.pieknits.com/blog/2007/05/post_4.html

I personally would leave the shape for now -then
FRONT
I would cut a square in the front with all the I (love) America words
Then cut strips so as to make other sentences like America (loves) me or More (love) and leave some of the letters scattered around these sentences.  Reserve some for the back
(As you do not have the letter O for the word "More" but you do have a pen for fabric just write it on a little square of white fabric from your t-shirt previously cut out).

BACK
Repeat the process for the back only this time you will have your own written letters. Play with them to make a funny sentence or just make an abstract picture.

Rearrange each square -randomly if you like- and sew it back on with a different pattern, with the sentences loopsided  for example and add embellishments such as sequels or some drawings made with stamps on top or whatever else you think off.

Then I would either funky it up by making little cuts along the fabric in some places in the manner shown in this video.

or go for the scissors and go mad . See this video in the same site stencilling a rocknroll tee

I hope you have fun and get some inspirations for your shirt and shoes too.
Good luck !

One suggestion: its government sucks.

Protest is more effective when it's gramatically correct:
it's = it is
its = belongs to it

Cute shirts!
