Just another update:  The plants are doing quite well (better, even, than before, probably due to the fact that I NEVER watered them) and the bottles have been slowly draining like they're supposed to.  I do think this one is a success.

Also, if you want something more sturdy for the tomato plants, I use those homedepot type buckets like this. http://www.minifarmhomestead.com/gardening/tomato.htm

I was wondering how these don't overwater plants. Thanks for the tutorial, I'm ready to try this when/if I get some indoor plants.

I wondered how those things work. Thanks for the tutorial! When I'm gone over the weekend, I usually just put a couple ice cubes on the dirt (for the bigger plants.  One cube for the smaller ones) and let that slowly melt.
