Crafting my way to a fully decorated house!

What is a zarf, you may ask?  Well, "zarf" is the word for the little thingy you put around a cup of coffee (or tea) to keep it from burning your hands, like the little cardboard ones they have at Starbucks.  I've been on an herbal tea drinking streak lately (and so has hubby), so I decided to make something to make our tea a little more fun. I bought green acrylic yarn, a pack of metallic buttons, two glass mugs, and a pack of "Sharpies" (actually, they're counterfeit Sharpies that my dollar store sells.  The ink is more see-through than a regular Sharpie).  I ended up decorating the outside of the mugs with a Sharpie, and then crocheting two zarfs to go around the outside to keep tea warm and protect our hands (My first ever finished crochet project and my first ever self-created pattern.  I just learned to crochet about 2 weeks ago).  The ribbed zarf and the striped mug are for the hubby, and the bobble stitch zarf and flowered mug are mine.  The grand total came to just over $5 after tax.  Hope you like them!  We're probably drinking green twig tea out of them right now!  By the way, these are much more of a sage green in person, not a bright green like they look on the computer.
Here's the final product:

The supplies:

The receipt:

Close up of the buttons.  I added buttons and loops so I could put them around mugs with handles.

The zarfs:

Thanks for looking!

Good idea, glass gets so much hotter than ceramic, but a word of warning I allow my kids to color on the sliding glass doors in the kitchen with sharpies cause it will come off easily.  If you decide you really like the designs you can redo them in glass paint, I believe plaid makes a good glass paint.

Yeah, because of the dollar store restriction, glass paint wasn't an option.  (How cool would it be to have a dollar store that sells glass paint?!) We don't have a dishwasher, so I just warned hubby to RINSE ONLY the outsides and SCRUB the insides.  It shouldn't be too much of a problem since they'll only be used for hot tea, and we don't use sugar, cream, honey, etc., that could make them get all gunky.  However, you're right, I may go back over them with glass paint later just to be safe.

Thanks for the great feedback!

Oh those are darling! I may have to borrow this idea for my daughter's birthday. She loves herbal teas and wonderfully funky tea cups. Would you mind if I borrowed your inspiration?

LOL, our dollar store sells "Shlepies". The writing on the lable is very similar to Sharpie, so I bought a pack thinking I was getting an awesome deal.  Roll Eyes Not so much when they don't stay well. Your mugs are really cute, good luck!

Thanks!  We've used them for tea four times now, and so far the marker is in place.  If we die from slow Sharpie ink poisoning a few years from now, I'll post a warning before I go...

Solitaire, be my guest - make all you want!  Hope you enjoy making them as much as I did!

Those look awesome! You only learned how to crochet 2 weeks ago? Could have fooled me. And thanks for adding a fantastic word to my vocabulary-- zarf? Wayyy too wonderful.  Smiley
