Shoji Screen- Frugal Stylie

I have wanted a shoji screen for about 10 years now.  But, cost usually deters me.  And now that I am a military wife, knowing that a screen could and most likely would be damaged in a move really has made me think twice about getting one. 

So, when I saw this challenge, I HAD to make my own screen! 

I used:

6 bamboo sticks
1 package of BBQ skewers
1 shower curtain
1 ball of sisal

$9 and some pocket change!

I used 4 supplies that I had on hand-
1 hot glue gun w/hot glue stick
1 about to be thrown away shower liner
1 roll of tape
1 Dremel

Here's how it all started out:

But let's face it- $134.99 is a lot when you can make something yourself 

I measured and cut my "screens" with the old shower liner to use as a template:


Then I drilled my holes in the bamboo so I could stick the skewers/support beams into, and I just hot glued the skewers into the holes:


Cut, folded, and taped the actual curtain for the screen to the support beams, and then used the sisal to tie the bamboo together to make joints for the screen:


Here's what it looked like once all those steps were completed:


Then I moved it into our bedroom so I could use it to block all of my husband's Warhammer 40K junk crap models from being the first thing I see upon waking up in the morning  :


And then here it is flat against the wall so you can see one screen from top to bottom:


Now dimensions for those who wish to know:

Each screen is approx. 5ft tall and 2ft wide!

That looks great! I like it more than the original- beautiful color combo (green w/ the bamboo) and I love the leaves!

Great job, enjoy your new screen! Hmmm... I might just have to make one for me sometime when I feel adventurous.....

I've always wanted one of these, but could never figure out where I'd put it. But hey, for $9, I'm sure I could find a place. Thanks for the great idea!

This is a great idea, and you did a really good job putting it all together. I have thought of doing a screen, but the cost always was so high. I did not want to use old bifold doors, etc, so this is a great instead.  Thanks so much for posting, and also, thanks to your husband for serving our country!

I love it. I too have always wanted one of these, but they are always to pricey and with two little nephews running aroung my house it would be impossible to keep nice. Great Job
