I loosely based my purse on this tutorial http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=32204.0 and this one http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=3105.0 (thanks thejordy and second-hand-smoke)!  I made the shape of the bag rounded with a larger bottom.  I also made the bottom a separate piece and made a wide shoulder strap.  Here's what I ended up with:

The outer fabric is the shelf liner, the inner fabric the baby blanket, and one of the earring dangles added to the upper left as an embellishment.

Here are my supplies.  I browsed around Dollar Tree for a little while looking for inspiration, and ended up with these items.  It all started with the shelf liner.  I kind of liked the print and the aqua color of the flowers, so I picked up 3 rolls.  To compliment it, I picked up a fleece baby blanket and some heart earrings in the same color.  To really be true to the theme, I also bought my thread there.  Each item was $1.00, so the total came out the $6.00.  I also used bobbin thread I already had and a magnetic snap reconned from an old purse.

Here's a close-up where you can see the texture of the shelf liner and the earring dangle.

And finally, a shot of the lining and my stuff inside.

EDIT
Here's what the back of the shelf liner looks like, if you were wondering.

Thanks for looking, and good luck, everyone!

ETA 4/14/08 - Disclaimer: The green thing is a spool knitter.  Any likeness it bears to a kinky toy is entirely unintentional!

This is absolutely awesome!  I picture it with black capri leggings and a black top - ZING.  Great colour and awesome idea with the shelf liner.

What great bag, I love the colors!  I'm going to have to check out the shelf liner section next time I hit the dollar store...

Was shelf liner hard to sew?  Was it sticky-backed?

Gee, thanks everyone. Cheesy

The shelf liner is the vinyl kind with a "grippy" back.  It's not adhesive, if that's what you were asking.  It wasn't as hard to sew as I thought.  I just had to give it a little extra help pulling through the machine.  I'll add a pic of it to my original post.

So pretty!!  I love the colors and it looks very professional!
It could even be made to turn inside out, so you'd have a
two-for-one!
Great job!

Wow.  That is so impressive!!  Seriously, my brain does not yet see shelf-liner and baby blanket and then think purse.

Great job!

What is the green item in the purse? It looks like it might belong in the Secret box of kink! Anyone else see what I mean?

Yeah, I was a little worried about green object too. Disclaimer in title? However, if someone's never seen one they probably won't see what it is anyway..

LOL I haven't checked this in a while and you all are cracking me up.  The green thing is a spool knitter.  Then again, I guess spool knitting could be kinky.  Grin

This is such a good idea.  Wouldn't these materials be great for a diaper bag?!
