Cute cakes!

I'll go for pirates if I were you.
(And for his 16th birthday I would go for classic 1950's pinups.)  Grin

My first thought was trains.
For my fourth birthday, I had a pizza party and a giant round cake that was decorated like a pizza.

Just have to say - my first thought on seeing this thread was 'yuk - who wants a birthday cake that's 3 years old?!'    Roll Eyes

There are some great ideas here - love the cupcake idea.  And I've never seen that pinata cake before either; looks great fun!

Please please post your creation when it's done!!  Smiley

My SIL's BFF got her a hamburger cake for her birthday. It was adorable.  If your kiddo likes McDonald's Happy Meals or hamburgers in general, here's one I found on the Woman's Day mag site. Looks cute! You could make fries with yellow cake cut into strips! (I think I would make the actual hamburger layer a tad thinner, but I'm hardly 3 years old!)

Here's the pic and a link to follow to get the directions....

You can't go wrong with Thomas! I did this for my boy last year...and except for the icing getting a little melty...(it was an August birthday)...it worked out great. He still talks about his Thomas Train cake!

The base is chocolate oreos and chocolate cake crumbled up with tinted green coconut grass. The track (which isn't showing up well in the photo) is some of those chocolate finger shaped cookies...I think made by the Keebler elves. The individual train cars were baked in mini loaf bread pans....I sort of pieced Thomas together from that. Iced everything with different colored butter cream icing and the wheels were iced chocolate 'wheel shaped' cookies. Maybe they were some of those '100 calorie snack packs'. I just used some sprinkles to decorate the top inside of the cars...but you could add more variety in using different candies on top...they used candy on the show. I used sprinkles because I'm too afraid of my little guy choking on that type of thing.

I think I got the idea from the t.v. channel PBS Sprout...a kids channel...and they have a show called 'the birthday show' ...we saw a little 'how to' blurb on making a train cake. I just had to make the engine look more like Thomas because my little guy is a Thomas maniac!

In keeping with this whole train theme. I found this post a while ago but I LOVED it, it's way too cool.

These are very good and so is the idea of making a giant cup cake with a train on top.
You could also make a fire breathing dragon-I found an example in instructables

http://www.instructables.com/id/Fire-Breathing-Dragon-Cake!!

Good luck and let us see the results

would love to have the instructions for the fire breathing dragon but i keep getting an error when i click on the link.

is there any other way to get them.
