This is my dilemma... I have made it a tradition to make homemade birthday cakes for my sons birthday. The first year I made a bear and it turned out great. The second year I made a race car and it turned out great. This year I am absolutely stumped as to what I should make him.

He's into so many things right now I really don't have one solid plan for a theme. Arghh!

Here's pics of his first two cakes.

Any ideas?

What sort of things is he into? Maybe you could do a multi-theme cake. Like if he is into pirates and dinosaurs; you could make a pirate dinosaur cake!

I have done a pirate theme.. the cake was a treasure chest with treasure spilling out.  The other neat one I remember was a ufo cake.  It was a large circle cake for the base and then I baked one in a bowl to invert on the top.  Skittles for windows, grey icing.....

A great place for ideas is the family fun magazine web site.

That would be pretty cool. Or just a dinosaur cake. Or Pirates. I made my little sister a Winnie-the-Pooh cake once, you could try one of his favorite characters. If he's into Spiderman you could make a web.

Make sure to show us what you come up with!

Okay, I have to ask if the little bears were made from small silicone bear pans.

Secondly, your cakes are beautiful!

Does he like legos? I saw an awesome Lego cake somewhere and they included individual Lego cakes for everyone. That might be too simple for your amazing abilities...I've also seen some pretty complex construction site cakes.

Good luck!

You should get a GIANT cupcake cake pan! I have one and it's awesome! That would be an easy peasy one and very showy. He would love it!

OMG! I Love the giant cup cake!!! I am seriously going to look into it. Cheesy

Thanks so much for all of the comments!

The little bear cakes were made out of a cupcake pan my mom found at a garage sale. I think they were made by Wilton. The actual bear mold is still made, but the one I used for my sons 1st birthday was the same one my mom used for mine. The car was a Wilton mold too.

Thanks again for all the help. Cheesy

I was at Joanne Fabrics yesterday and they had this pan there.  We do have Joanne ETC here so I don't know if it will be in all the regular Joannes.

Fo those who don't know - a Joanne ETC is like the size of a Walmart!  I know I can believe it either when I am there!

If you own the car pan, you can modify it to be an airplane.  I did one for my husband's birthday a few weeks back, and the kids loved it.

When I was little I got a train cake, made up of several cuboid cakes, covered in sweets as decoration. The sweets were put on in the shape of the windows, and wheels and everything. It was the best cake I ever got!

Your cakes look great btw, I love the racecar one =]

I'd ask him what he wants. I heard that little children don't like surprises - they like to be part of the preparation 'cause that is half the fun... Maybe you could find the theme together... It can be a favorite cartoon character, pirates, goblins, monsters, dinosaurs, a sport cake if he likes a particular sport,...

How about a pinata cake?? I made one for my daughter's 2nd birthday and it was a huge hit (hehehehe)! I did a post here http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=113262.0 a while back which has a link to the recipe/method and my translation for non-Australian readers. Its from the Women's Weekly Children's Birthday Cake Book, which is pretty much a bible for Australian kids parties! (see http://melbournegastronome.blogspot.com/2007/09/australian-womens-weekly-childrens.html)

My SIL's BFF got her a hamburger cake for her birthday. It was adorable.  If your kiddo likes McDonald's Happy Meals or hamburgers in general, here's one I found on the Woman's Day mag site. Looks cute! You could make fries with yellow cake cut into strips! (I think I would make the actual hamburger layer a tad thinner, but I'm hardly 3 years old!)

Here's the pic and a link to follow to get the directions....

You can't go wrong with Thomas! I did this for my boy last year...and except for the icing getting a little melty...(it was an August birthday)...it worked out great. He still talks about his Thomas Train cake!

The base is chocolate oreos and chocolate cake crumbled up with tinted green coconut grass. The track (which isn't showing up well in the photo) is some of those chocolate finger shaped cookies...I think made by the Keebler elves. The individual train cars were baked in mini loaf bread pans....I sort of pieced Thomas together from that. Iced everything with different colored butter cream icing and the wheels were iced chocolate 'wheel shaped' cookies. Maybe they were some of those '100 calorie snack packs'. I just used some sprinkles to decorate the top inside of the cars...but you could add more variety in using different candies on top...they used candy on the show. I used sprinkles because I'm too afraid of my little guy choking on that type of thing.

I think I got the idea from the t.v. channel PBS Sprout...a kids channel...and they have a show called 'the birthday show' ...we saw a little 'how to' blurb on making a train cake. I just had to make the engine look more like Thomas because my little guy is a Thomas maniac!
