I was intrigued by this challenge because I was sure that anything that was made would look like it was made from a sheet...boy, have things changed!

I found a full set of jersey sheets at a discount store for $9.99.  I barely used half of the top sheet to make a fun summer dress.

I used Simplicity 4577, but since it was a knit fabric, I left off the zipper and serged all of the edges--talk about a FAST and easy dress!  No hand sewing at all!

I added decorative stitching on the piece that goes around under the bust just to disguise some extra pounds that I am trying hard to lose before summer!

Photo courtesy of my electronics challenged hubby...I have more photos but I am having computer issues...I wanted to be sure I posted before the deadline!

This was fun and I encourage everybody to join these challenges for some fun and to sew "outside the box"!

Thanks for looking!

P.S. I have plenty of sheet left to make some PJ bottoms!

Oh, Bravo!!!  Hey...it's so good to SEE you!  Ha-ha.  I always love seeing the people behind the screen names. That cut is really flattering, too.

You're beautiful!!!

Wow, that's *really* cute, and to think it was originally a bed sheet!  Love what you did with the stitching around the waist.

Wowie wow wow!!  I was thinking the same thing about your avatar!

This is SUCH a pretty dress!  1)  I wish I could make something like this.  2)  It wouldn't fit me this summer, if I could. Cheesy

Here's the fullsize image.  It shows the fabric a little better.  It's so fun & flirty... I love it!  http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n47/alwaysinmyroom/sheetchallenge_inventory-06.jpg

thanks everyone!

jmi--if you want to start sewing clothing, using a sheet is a good idea--there is so much extra in case you goof up!  As a matter of fact, I had cut out the front and when I was ready to sew it to the bodice, I held it up and noticed a dang small hole!!!  No wonder the sheets were cheap--they must have been seconds!  I had plenty of fabric to cut out a new front!  Plus scraps to practice my serger's rolling hem (getting the tension right is the trick!)...

crafty_dame--I think I have a pick of the bodice detail close up that I will send you (It shows way too much cleavage up close!!)--but the fabric has tiny flowers and is jersey knit.

I definitely think I'm going to have to give it a try someday soon! I wonder if Rob would be upset if I cut up our sheets Wink -- or I'll just get to the thrift store and buy some lol

Do they hold up well in the wash as clothes?  I prewashed before I sewed but I am concerned because all of my sheets seem to be getting softer and softer with each wash...I am wondering if the dress is going to go limp on me!

ha ha jmi--don't cut up your good sheets!  I would only recommend this if you come across a bargain or if the style takes a lot of fabric...did you see the cute croquet dress made from a sheet?  A full skirt is definitely a better choice to take up a lot more fabric...I don't think I am going to do this on a regular basis...I just did this challenge in the hopes that people would see the possibilities and get involved on this board!

and because I need a dress to wear in hot New Orleans next week!! Cheesy

All the sheets I have worked with have all been used. So, I know what I am getting into!!! Some are really starch-ie and others are really limp... I guess regular clothes are the same way right? I have always just thrown them in the wash and not had too much trouble, but they've had sometimes years of washing already!!!

i LOVE the texture of old sheets... the good quality ones that havebeen washed a million times... they're so soft and almost silky! the dress probably will get softer, and it'll just be comfier!

yay, boobies! can't wait for the close up! Wink

i think this dress would be an AWESOME maternity dress for you jean! if the front piece was made bigger, and then gathered under the bust, there'd be plenty of room for peanut!

jamie, get yer butt to the thrift store! no cutting up your own sheets!
