If you are like me, I was totally shocked when I saw this for the first time.  It is a real life purple potato.  I found it at the local Co-op.  If you can get your hands on these, they are tons of fun.  Kiddies will love these.  They are a shimmery purple on the outside and the inside is purple with a bit of white.  They mash up a lovely purple, and if left sitting overnight will deepen in color significantly.  The pic doesn't do the color justice!!  Esp. the mashed.  They are much darker in person.  And even more fun to eat!

Lots of Love!!   Cheesy

BEHOLD..

PURPLE POTATO!!

Now you go... Whoaaa.   Shocked

They say they climb mountains because they are there.  I wonder if it would astound them to know that the very same reason is why the rest of us go around them.

ooooh how cool are those!

I've never seen these in the flesh....though I have seen bags of chips with these and some cool looking stripey  ones.

Boring taters no more! On a quest now.

Do they have a name? err a variety name?

Oooh, yeah, I love those!  Purple mashed potatoes are the best.  I want them to be part of my Thanksgiving tradition.  I think they are sweeter than regular potatoes, and the guy at the farmers market said they are higher in iron than regular potatoes, that is part of what gives them the color.  Awesome and yummy - you give me a craving!

This link has some info about the purple potato. http://everything2.com/?node_id=1387892

Apparently they are resistant to blight & pests.  I may grow some of these.   Grin

I'd say check your local famers market, or your local co-op.  If the co-op doesn't have them, simply request them.  I'm sure they'd be happy to order some.

That is neat. I can't find purple potatoes here for the life of me... maybe I'll grow some, too.

I eat them often, it taste like regular patato. I use them to add some color in the plates when I have guest, I always have great comments about it.

It's really easy to found purple patato in Quebec city.
