Hey guys!

It's great to see others from the area!  I was purusing this thread, and noticed some cool shows from 2004 (Made in VA, Ladyfest).   Does anyone have a heads up on what's jumping off this year?  I know the 1st Bizarre Market (Chop Suey Books) is in March, but unsure of the date; and the 17th Street Farmer's Market starts in April.

Where else are the indie crafters at??!!??

I am a 17th st farmer's market vendor/crafter. I'm glad you brought that up. I am on the advisory counsil and am thinking of pitching a craft expo/knit-in on a Saturday mucho market day. With knitters, yarn vendors, sheep farmers, demos, spinners, etc.... Any ideas/thoughts?Think big!

Also, I'm friends with the girls from 17.5 across from the market. They just reopened and they want to start a stitch and bitch. You interested? I'm thinking a happy hour time snb. I have a young son and can't go to the snb at Panera on Teusdays, but I really want to get in a group! I have one person who responded to my post on the yahoo snb group so far.I'm gonna go see them this weekend. If you're up for it let me know, I'll post here again if there is a date/time set.

By the way, what do you make? Do you vend?

last i heard, the next bizarre market is on april 30th.  read it in style, but i could be wrong.

i am also definitely interested in finding out about more shows/festivals going on.  i don't think made in va is happening this year, as it was a part of the grand opening of the vcu commons thing.  i'm trying to find out for sure what's happening with that, and if it's not happening, i've got some possibilities/ideas for starting another festival through vcu/on vcu campus.  i'll let you all know if it works out. Smiley

and larkstudio, i think i talked to you at the farmer's market during the grand illumination thing near christmas.  do you make clutches?

Yep, that's me!  I'm STILL freezing from that night! Cheesy

I'll try to keep this thread going with places/dates that I find out.  I would love to help set up an Art vs. Craft (http://www.flyingfishgallery.com/) type event in Richmond, but I'm not sure if one is happening already.  I remember something like that at Plant Zero last year, but don't remember details.  Keep me posted on your ideas for VCU - I'm alum!

I'd really love a SNB on this side of town.  I have a toddler too and it's just hard to go all the way out to the west end.  If everyone has kids maybe we could do a combination SNB and playgroup, although I don't know how much we'd actually get done.

The first official SNB downtown is a  happy hour SNB, (no booze, just caffine) Friday Feb 18th, at the 17.5 Ethos Cafe on 17th St downtown on the farmer's market  at 4:00 till when ever you need to go. Tell your friends, bring your projects , or come and learn.

The 17th st farmers market... that's the one in shockhoe, right? that got completely flooded last September?

I've never been, but I didn't know they had craftspeople there. I figured it was all, well, farmers. :-P

I'm trying to get ready for Bizarre Market. Every time I wanna go but I can never get ready in time.

Until then there are buisnesses down there, like the coffee shop that will be the home of the Friday Stitch and Bitch, 17.5 Ethos Cafe, on 17th Street, 4:00 till.... starting this Friday Feb 18th.

There is a Fall Festival in Newport News every October. I did it last year. But the application is due in spring. Here is the site:

Damn, I'm usually out of town all summer. I try to keep busy by going to workshops nonstop. That and I get school credit for them which helps keep me graduating on time (I go to VCU).

Any definitive word on the next Bizarre Market? I've heard differeing reports on when the date is.

We had a great time at our first Sn'B at the coffee shop this Friday. Looks like it'll be a regular thing, every Friday, 4ish or whenever you can come. I can't do this Friday, as I'm out of town but come on down Richmond knitters! They'll be others there.

BTW, the new yarn shop, Yarn Lounge in Carytown has a hiring sign up! I'm all set, but if you know anyone, send them down. (and I have no relation to the shop, but if I could, I would so very much work there! )

Man!  I wish I knew how to knit!  I sew, but it's not quite as easy to bring my sewing machine to hang out.

One day I'm going to learn how to knit, but for now I'm obsessed with perfecting the construction of the cloth diaper and its relevent accessories.

Leila!  I didn't know you where on craftster!  how great.  Well, whenever you're ready to learn to knit or crochet come on downtown!

I also posted this on the stich n' bitch forum, but it's worth repeating, I suppose:  Is anyone else planning on being at 17.5 this Friday?  I'm thinking about heading down there, but probably won't get there until after 8:00 since I have to work late.  Hope to see some of you there!

Hey bring some needles and yarn (think big) and I'll be more than happy to teach you!! I'll be downtown Friday, a little later but not too late as the little guy will be in tow, and I don't thinkhe can hang too long. We'll see.

See you soon,

Thanks BethIDon'tAlreadyKnow, but I think I'll have to miss this one.  We're a one income family and the finances don't allow new hobby supplies right now!  Not with the fabric addiction I just finished feeding!  I can't even buy new sewing supplies for a while, much less knitting supplies.  Maybe after I sell a few more auctions...=)

Oh I so understand! I'm a single momma myself, and a public school teacher, which = broke! I can't ever afford a babysitter, so if the little guy can't go, I can't either. That's why I love knitting! I just picked it up over the summer, but didn't get into it until recently when my son started walking and getting into everything. I sew and do other things too, but I can knit while watching my toddler, and take it with me to places too!
What kind of work do you do?( Sewing etc..?)
If you can get out sometime for a little grown up time, come and join us anyway! Bring some stichery or something small to work on. I'd love to meet you.

Hey Beth.  I have so much respect for you and other single moms.  I'm married and stay home with Eliza and it's challenging enough as it is!

I just learned how to sew and am borrowing my mother-in-laws sewing machine indefinitely, but I really, really love it.  I sew Eliza's diapers and all the relevant accessories (covers, doublers, etc) and because of Craftster, I've worked up enough courage to try a diaper bag.  I made a temporary one from some camo fleece I was going to use for a diaper, but it's just a tote bag style and I didn't bother spending much time or effort on it (and you can tell).  It works for now and later I can use it as a shopping bag.  =)  I hope to start the diaper bag this weekend.

Eventually, I'd like to progress to making some clothes for Eliza.  I don't think it'll be too incredibly hard.  I've heard that simple clothes are easier to make than diapers, so I'm not too worried yet.  I just haven't gone out and bought any patterns.

I definitely want to learn how to knit, both for fun and to make Eliza some wool diaper soakers (we're really into this cloth diapering thing, if you haven't noticed!).  I might be able to buy some stuff in a couple weeks, depending on how my auctions do (I sell kid's clothings online as a small home business).  We've had some unexpected medical expenses and other things come up recently that have put more of a crunch on our budget then usual.  =(

Anyway, I'd love to come out tomorrow if the weather permits.  Will you be bringing your son?  If I come, it'll probably be with Eliza.  I guess I could drop her off with my husband as he's leaving work, but it all depends on this finicky weather we've been having.

Okay, this is way too long!  Talk with you later!

Hey All!

I poked my head into 17.5 last Friday, but was late to meeting someone, so I didn't join.  Leila - I too am a die-hard sewing fanatic (I'm sure my addiction would put yours into a wonderful perspective!) - but would still like to come by, meet everyone and maybe get some hand-work done when I have it.  I am the queen of diaper bags right now (3 to make by 3/4/05), so if you want to discuss, PM me.

Hope to see you guys soon!

Back to some original thread stuff - anyone vending at the St. Pat's day festival March 12 in Shockoe?  Anyone have any information on the CAM Fest in April?

I will bring Andy with me tonight, but just be warned, it is a coffee shop and people do smoke there. I don't mind it as Andy is a little older and no one smokes right on him, but when he was smaller, no way. I get the impression your little dear is little, so if you can leave her with hubby, you might want to.  I know I would if I had the option. It' s so good for us mommas to get some momma time! I
'm going to Wmbg/Va Beach (both) this weekend with my mom, which is always nice, as I can go off on my own for a little bit and do my own thing. We are actually going to go to the Quilt show at the Hampton Coliseum, and I am going to try to find some awesome fat quarters for my goodies this season! These are what I make and sell at the market, but only when I'm out of school. www.geocities.com/ithnkuno/bibsandburpees
I probally won't sell my goodies at the St Patty's fest, can't predict the weather with the little one and all, but if I do anything it will be with my momma's Bake Shoppe, selling her goodies.
Look forward to seeing you tonight! We'll get there earlier, and pop in and out dependant on the tot of course.

Leila,
Hey........we should get together and sew some stuff sometime.  I made Anika's diaper bag, and it really was super easy.  If I were making another one I'd make it smaller than Anika's.  If the bag is huge, like ours is, you just end up putting tons of stuff in it and it gets too heavy. I can write out some instructions for you if you want.
I've also made some clothes for Ani.  Little girl dresses are SO easy.  And you can make them kind of long and put a big hem in the bottom, then let them out when they grow.  I also made a few little stuffed toys that are way cute.  The best thing about making clothes is that they always turn out way cooler that whatever you can buy in the store.
And now that I know how to crochet there's really no stopping.  I made Ani a poncho that I just finished last night.  Adorable.

Everyone,
i totally didn't get down to 17.5 on Friday.  I ended up spending several hours with a friend of mine who had just broken up with her boyfriend.  It was kind of messy.  Hopefully I'll be there this Friday though.

Must....... crochet........ more........Must........crochet.......

Beth,
You are so funny. Hey, just a thought, and I was thinking of this when we met actually and you were talking about your play groups. What about some crafty moms getting together with the kids for a crafty moms play date sometime? We could knit, crochet, sew, share, what ever. Maybe an evening or weekend once a month. Let me know what you think. My place is tiny, and I'd hate to volunteer someone's place, but maybe there is somewhere communial we could gather...

Beth(the other one)

Oh and I did go Friday, but Andy was a little wild. And a new girl showed up, can you believe her name was Beth too!

Depending on how many people wanted to come, we might be able to do it at my house.  We don't have a very big living room, but if it was only a couple people with kids, it wouldn't be so bad.  I guess the only thing that might make it hard is that since Eliza isn't mobile yet, we don't have any baby gates or anything.  Oh and we have dogs, if that's a problem for anyone.  They don't mind kids, but just in case someone's allergic or scared or something.

But yeah, I'd totally be down with a crafty mom playdate!  Sounds like a blast, plus I'd really like to meet a few more moms that I can relate with!

anybody got any information on this?  how to sign-up to vend?  fees?  etc.?

How about Daisy Days at St. Catherine's (April 22 & 23)?  I don't have any info about it other than this:

Maybe I'll have enough bags together by then to start participating!  When you go to a market, about how many items do you take with you to sell?

Thanks Anna!  I'm on it!

Leila - I would suggest to take as many as possible.  You want folks to have a good selection to choose from, and since you're paying to be at most markets - you want to sell, sell, sell!  I'm using this time to really concentrate on getting a good supply together for April/May market season.

I still pop down to 17.5 most Fridays around 6. (though not this week 4/22) It's a struggle to get a steady group together. I wouldn't mind taking suggestions for another night. I'd love some more knitters and stitchers to get in on something there.
And there is a group that meets Mondays at 6 at Captain Buzzys in Church Hill. They are pretty nice. I've been once.

I know there are several very talented ladies on this post that will be there at the Bizzare Market. I can't wait to see it. I'm sitting this out myself, trying to gear up instead for the Farmer's Market season.
