Happy Friday Everyone!!

I have a bunch this week..  I was in snowy MN last week and when I got home I just dove into my stash and spun spun spun!  I went thru such withdrawal when I was gone!!

My first this week comes from a Spontaneous Spinning batt by Loop.
It's suri alpaca, bamboo, merino, mohair and TONS of glitz!!  It's spun thick and thin plied with a metallic silver thread and beehives.
Carolina On my Mind
63 yards

The next is really fun.  It's for the April EtsyFAST challenge, which is Storms, as well as the FF Ravelry last week, which was Rainforest.  I spun this from loose Shetland lambie locks dyed by HollyEQQ.   It's called Tropical Storms.  It's amazing bright greens and blues and fuscias..  The blue sky right after it storms.. and fuscias like the bold flowers in the rainforest.. I added some angelina for sparkle.. like the raindrops still sparkling on the green foilage and the beautiful flowers.  I love how it turned out.  There's also an amazing halo around this yarn.. which I wasn't able to catch really well..
103 yards

The next one turned out way better than I had ever hoped.  It's a real mix of stuff I had.. some different shades of pink locks from ArtClub and TerraBellaSpun, Some Black and Grey locks from ArtClub, a couple of scrap batts from Art club and black and steel angelina for sparkle..all plied around back rayon  thread with coils and beehives and some pink irridecent pom poms (10 1/2inch poms, and 4 1inch poms)..
Pop Princess
43 yards

This is my first attempt at Candy Striping.. carrying a wrapping thread along with the single.  It's spun thick and thin with coils and curls spun into the single and wrapped with a metalliac blue thread..    Also a part of the EtsyFAST April Challenge..
Stormy Skies  (because of the shades of blue and the blue thread like a cyclone cloud.. and purple angelina hints like when the sky turns purple when lightening flashes)

Finally this is called Hodge Podge.  It's a base of superwash merino with Tons of other stuff thrown in for fun.. locks, sari silk, sequins, angelina.  It's spun thick thin for lots of texture.
90.25 yards

All photos were taken before twist is set (except tropical storms) so yarn is a bit kinkier than it will be Smiley

YAY it's friday.. and it's NOT snowing here!!

Wow - all your yarns are gorgeous.  As I scrolled, I thought that each was the best, and then the next one came along.  I think I love Pop Princess & Carolina on my Mind most, but don't tell the others Tongue

Happy Fibre Friday everyone!
jazzturtle those yarns made me drool all over the keyboard, they are stunning!

I got some carding/combing done while watching Lost Boys the other night on video (yes video and it had all the 80's ads on...hilarious) And i just brushed and spun until all my stash of Cotswold fleece was gone. It was lovely to spin because the fibres are so long it practically drafts itself. I have left it undyed and spun it as thin as i possibly can so I can maybe ply it on itself once its dyed. Hopefully this will make lovely stripy yarn!

I haven't worked out the yardage yet, but it was two full bobbins , so its the biggest single skein I've spun so far. Maybe I can make a whole item out of it at the end! Wink

can't wait to see what everyone has spun!

Jazzturtle, I just want to dive into your yarn and fiber stash. ^=^ So pretty.........

I had a fun spinning week. I let my boys dye some roving with the last of the easter egg dye, they had a blast with it and I had fun watching them.
Heres the roving.

And then heres the yarn from it. I can't wait to have my MIL make me something out of it. he he.

Then I started some more scrap yarn. Two skiens of blue and white fabric that I hope to make into bowls.

Jazzturtle, your yarn is divine, as allways. And I'm very curious about those fabric bowls!
This time, I have some yarn to show as well, and I think I like it very much. The plying didn't went great, the single started to break! So I plied it very tight.
This is the end result;

I guess I'm still learning.
How do you do that, plying a single with itself? Do you measure how long it is and cut it in half?

And I bought some wonderful roving from Cheryl's etsy shop, that will become my first spinning that is actually sufficient to do something nice with  Smiley

Heres my first entry to a Fibre Friday.  I have no idea of a name, so its just called "It's Purple!"

Hey all,

My first yarn this week I spun from raw locks and some carded locks that I bought from angorabunny@etsy. The colours are pretty vibrant. This yarn was a first for me as I had never spun locks. It took me alot longer to spin, but I like how it turned out.

Wild Child - 55 Yards - BFL, Mohair, Angora goat, alpaca

Next up is still on the bobbin. I dyed up some fiber in blues and greys and left some white and threw it into my carder with some silver and blue glitz. It's merieno, targhee, and silk. I'm going to ply it back on itself. Should look good when done.

See you all next week

Great yarns this week, everyone!  I really love Stormy Skies and It's Purple.

I only have one to share this week, called Starlight:

Started with the same grey single that I used for "Morning Magic" a few weeks ago (I have no idea why I spun so much of that to begin with), and plied it with a metallic filament in shades of turquoise and gold, with a hint of pink.  Came in at 3 oz, 343 yards, 13/14 wpi (fingering weight).

Oh my gosh inle_rah, Starlight is sooo gorgeous!

Here's what I've got for this week - both are spun from a superwash merino/viscose blend.

Angelic - white plied with gold thread.

Holiday Lights - spun from roving I dyed all the colors of Christmas lights.

Here's mine!!!
I think I've already explained that I have the best neighbor in the whole wide world, but for those of you that don't know/remeber java's fiber story here are the cliff notes: I got my wheel (a quirky Ashford Elizabeth) for $75 in the middle of February. I live next to a fiber hoarder and she unloaded a ton of things on me to 'practice' on... here's what I've done in the last two weeks (i was busy last Firday and missed Fiber Friday!!!)

This is 100% mohair. I long drew (?) one bobbin and tried getting more air into it... so that one turned out fairly bulky. Then the next one I tried the long draw but really really thin, then messed around with plying. I plied the bulky and thin for one skein, and then chain plied the rest of the thin stuff on its self! Commercially dyed top.

Here's a similar colorway, but this one is silk and mohair, chain plied and worsted draw. Comercially dyed top.

Here's a 100% wool that I worsted and chain plied. If it were up to me, I would call this one "banana tree"! It's not as purple as it looks here! The colors are very bright green and yellow and a mocha brown!

Here's some hemp that's currently on the wheel! What an experience this is!!!

Awesome stuff once again this week! I especially love Starlight. So subtle but gorgeous.

I have some batts to share this week--haven't felt the urge to spin, too busy having a cold. But I did card up some batts for a spinning friend's birthday present.

They contain superwash merino, cotswold locks, sari silk, and novelty yarn snippets. I carded them only once so they should spin up into a funky, chunky yarn!

I also blended up a "scrap batt", running it through the carder twice to make it nice and smooth. I'm looking forward to spinning this one up.

Haven't done a whole lot of spinning in the past month or so, but here's what I've got done:

These are all superwash, trying to spin them to sock-appropriate weight. I don't have yardage on them yet, because I'm being too lazy to reskein and measure them:

And then these two are both BFL, spun from leftover scraps I've dyed:

"Demon Barber of Fleet Street" is just WOW! It looks so interesting.  I also love Starlight and Carolina On my Mind.  Loop's batts are just gorgeous... I have some in the mail now, can't wait!

This week I have a few I've finished
"Morning Mist"  hand carded merino/firestar played with iridescent thread that I hand tied iridescent glass beads on.

The rest of the singles after I ran out of thread I tried out navajo plying and 2ply from a center pull ball

My other skein this week is from some sprinkle dyed merino I picked up at a fiber show earlier this month.
I'm calling it "Into the Deeps"

The remaining singles after my first bobbin was full I made a 2ply and then tried out andean plying with the remainder

OH! I know I know! Halo means that it has a fuzzy effect... eyelash could be considered to have a halo... it's more like the FO looks super fuzzy like it's still fur or something...

OK, I'm new, I don't know all the lingo, and the only reason I know halo, is because i LOVE halo! I want to spin up some halo-ie stuff so I can do a yummy shawl!!!

My fave halo pic is from HollyEQQ (who I got the locks from) She captured it amazingly on her most recent yarns..

I have only two yarns to post this week. Things have been really busy/stressful/pre-occupied-with-other-things, but still fit in a little time to spin Wink

First we have:

Mantequilla!
Commercial Dyed 80/20 Merino/Silk
4.1 oz
267 yards total
It is ridiculously soft and silky... like butter Wink

Then we haaaave:

Mother Earth
Hand dyed with wiltons, spun, then over dyed because i hated it Tongue
Mill ends from the Sheep Shed
3.5 oz
meeeh, havent counted the yardage or tagged it yet... I will though.

I started knitting some fingerless mitts with my Autumn Kisses that I posted last time around and it is knitting up so nicely! It's my first legit project with my own handspun.

I spun some green yarn from a batt this week.  Of course, I don't actually have pictures... Wink

How do you do that, plying a single with itself? Do you measure how long it is and cut it in half?

You can wind the yarn into a center pull ball and ply the two ends together.  I have a ball winder, which makes it really simple (and is really fun to wind) but you can easily wind by hand.  Here's a tutorial with pictures: http://birdsnestknits.typepad.com/birds_nest_knits/2006/02/how_to_wind_a_c.html

You could also try Navajo plying, which looks like 3-ply.  Here's the video that I taught myself from: http://www.joyofhandspinning.com/spin-navajo-ply.shtml

This is actually one I've worked on over a long time because I don't normally have access to my grandmother's wheel with being away at university. I spun the superwash merino and plied one skein on my grandmother's production wheel and then plied the other skein on a Lendrum. It's really crazy to see the difference in the skeins mostly due to the different wheels used. I've not set the twist yet so it should help even it out when I do.

The green is less yellow in person and the blue is a bit darker too.

"Demon barber" is my favorite this week.  Also, I wish I could ply with thread as well as you all- I get a big floofy mess whenever I do it.  Can't tell if it's because I'm using a drop spindle, or if the singles aren't thin and tight enough or I can't maintain even tension or all of those things.  I only have one this week because my other single has failed me (i.e. my cat go ahold of it while I was trying to ply.  ARGH!)

This is from a corriedale roving I dyed, called Sakura.  It's about 86 yards, 2 ounces, thick and thin:

NoodlePrincess, I love that crazy batt one ^-^ I can see that becoming a cool hat!

I mentioned I was making a bowl out of my fabric yarn and I sat and tried tonight.

It's short, good for a decorative thing, and needs lots of work on making everything even, but it was an interesting try. ^-^ It took a while to get the hang of it, so I'm hoping the second one comes out at least slightly more even. *laughs*

Yeah! I can finally post for Fiber Friday because I got my wheel today. I started with some practice singles from some mill end roving and moved on to core spinning alpaca seconds I dyed recently, mixed with sari silk shreds and fabric. Then I plied them, which I tend to avoid with my drop spindle, to make this:

I'm a little late, but I'm here! This is my very first Fiber Friday--I spun one little bit of yarn before on a wheel, but I just got the hang of using my drop spindle. I dyed two batts of Merino, one with Berry Blue kool-aid and one with Wilton food dyes. It's not enough to really make anything consequential of, but I love it!

I started really getting the hang of it by the time I got to the blue strand. It needs a lot of work, but I think I get it now!

I'm not doing personal swaps right now, but if you're interested, go ahead and PM me anyway--maybe we can work it out for later. Smiley

You all have totally ruined me.  I was inspired to try crocheting again and went to the store to look for some yarn.  Nothing there fit my mental image of the sort of yarn I wanted to use.  It was all so same and uninteresting.  I am reduced to stash busting with some ancient same old same old stuff until I can find something that I like.... or until I learn to make my own.  Guess I'd better work harder on that stash.

Thanks for your advice, I think I might try both these methods sometime Smiley

So I'm a little late with pictures, though this has been finished for a few days.  This was from a batt that I carded with wool, angelina, and a ton of firestar.  I used flash to take the picture to show off how shiny it is.

"Green Sparkle" about 150 yards

Someday it will be woven into a decoration for my wall.
