The great thing about garter stitch is that you don't really have to look at it if you've been knitting for a while.  I knitted up my scarf in probably 3 weeks, while reading the 4th, 5th, and 6th Harry Potter books.  They were big enough that I could take my book and knitting bag to the library, set the book open on the table and read while knitting under the table.
