I wonder if you can use knit strips for the appliqued pieces? I've been thinking about attempting a mixed woven/knit quilt and this technique might be the way to go. I guess all I can do is try!

I'm sure this would work.  And maybe even better since the knits won't ravel.  Have fun!

Petunya, I'm sure you could use knits for the applique, but I'd probably pre-shrink the cotton base fabric first. Otherwise, after the first washing, your applique pieces might be all bunchy because the cotton underneath them shrunk but they didn't.

Good idea. I should probably pre-wash all of it. Another step....

Glad to see your version. I have been thinking about making a full twin size comforter (x2) for my girls' room, but haven't been brave enough. Did you have any trouble managing that much fabric in your machine? I have been trying to think of ways to do smaller portions but still quilt as I go. Not sure. It is near the bottom of my list at the moment.

It would be easy to break your background into thirds or quarters, make them up, and then stitch them together. You'd have a band half inch minimum where the pieces joined, but you could just make that part of the design, or use the same background fabric and make it very subtle.
