What can I use to seal my table?

I bought a pooey table from ebay and ecided to recon it. I've sanded it down to get the veneer off and I've wallpapered the top. I just wodered what will be the best thing to seel it with? (it's going to be sewing machine table)
The guy at the diy store recommened this spray seelant that dries super shny so I bought it but after doing a test on a scarp of the wallpaper it's not going to work.
Would just a clear varnish/laquer do the job? I'm worried about it soaking through the paper and ruining it.
