I've never been here, but I've been tempted... there's apparently a place in Maple Grove called the Studio at Rush Creek.  www.studio-rush.com

They do all sorts of things, glass work and painting, metal work...

If anyone goes there, let me know how you like it!  It's so tempting!  (They advertise a lot of their classes on craigslist, that's how I found out about them...)

I'm a native St Paul gal, now  living elsewhere. I visited this thread to see what new places I should check on my next trip home (thank you all!), but I also have one to add:

 Mosaic on a Stick
It's in St Paul, on Snelling Ave (north of University Ave, south of Hamline University) http://mosaiconastick.com/

It has mosaic supplies--like, the last time I was there, a whole rack of different colors of grout, which I didn't even know existed---books, some finished pieces for sale, studio space, classes, parties, and a fun creative atmosphere. The owners, Lori and Maria, are friendly and also pretty multi-crafty  so if you are new to the area, or new to crafting, they are good people to talk to about other craft'n'art venues and stores.

There was a commercial on late at night a few months back, for a place in the Twin Cities area that sold all kinds of crafting supplies. The ad showed a bunch of doll parts, among other things. I can't recall the name of the place, but really want at least the web address. If you know what I'm talking about, PLEASE contact me. I've been trying to find this place since last spring!

Arg! Mentioned going there and hubby said I need to finish some of the stuff I've been working on, as there's no more room in the garage. I have a bench made from a headboard, a rocker, 4 wooden chairs and a kid's chair all primed and ready to paint, as well as 2 very large boxes filled with wooden objects (from bowls to lamps to beads) that I have also primed over the past week. Today I get to play with paint!!!
Can't wait to sell some of this stuff so I can go to this store and get more interesting stuff to craft with!

Ax man is super random. It sells surplus...stuff...so it's not really a craft store per se, you just never know what they'll have. A lot of it is electrical/mechanical type stuff, but there's just a ton of...random stuff...LOL

The randomness is what makes these kinds of places so cool. I moved out of CA, where there were a ton of thrift stores, and most had a 'junk' area with building supplies and stuuf.
I have yet to hit a thrift store in the western WI/eastern MN area that has a 'junk' area. And most of the yard sales in my area are nothing but baby stuff - there must have been a baby boom in the past few years.
There was one shop in Canada I used to go to, just to bury my arm elbow-deep in huge boxes of random buttons.
I'm looking forward to visiting Ax-Man!

They have an iron lung. It's THAT random.  Cheesy

Yeah, I would not suggest that you come here specifically to go to AxMan. But if you were coming here anyway, to not go to AxMan would be like going to California and not going to In-N-Out... it would just be wrong!!!

YUCK! In-and Out Burger is soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo over-rated! But I really miss good mexican food and sushi sold in the grocery store. And real fresh fruit that actually TASTES like it's supposed to. And perfectly ripe avocados. And and and and..........I guess I just miss California. My art was considered tame there......

I don't know if you guys will count this as a crafty resource, but CostPlus World Market is going to be closing all of its Minnesota locations.  I haven't seen any blow-outs yet, but I'm planning on making regular stops there as things get cheaper, since I use a lot of that type of stuff.  (Whimsies, boxes, baskets, glass jars, etc.)

Just thought I'd give a heads up!

CostPlus has the coolest furniture! Years ago, I went in for a rug. Hubby sat at a table and refused to leave unless it went with us. I call it the Conan table, cuz it's so heavy and rustic.

I don't know about there being one in Anoka, but the one I used to hit all the time is in Fridley off of 65.

When an artist who makes mirrors, tables & bowls decorated with images, trinkets, tile fragments & often hidden words in the designs was asked what her artwork meant to her she said: "Life smashes things to bits and you can put it back together to make something beautiful with the pieces."

I tend to do a lot of paper-related projects making books and all so my favorite places to go in Minnesota are:

Archiver's
more scrapbook-oriented but have a good selection of papers, wide array of tools, and have frequent classes/workshops!
http://www.archiversonline.com/

Paper Source
This store has a lot of quality stationery, some higher-end tools for embossing, and beautiful handmade sheets of Japanese, Indian, and Lokta papers. Great source for decorative papers.
http://www.paper-source.com/

Anchor Paper
My absolute favorite place to go for unique paper. Unless I need bulk, wholesale amounts, I usually shop at Anchor Paper Express rather than at their warehouse b/c there they have smaller amounts available as well as more scrapbooking/embossing/bookbinding tools. (Though you can usually go in the back where they stock and get paper by the #.) Anchor Paper has never failed me for either crafting or graphic design projects. LOVE THEM.

How funny.  I work for a printing company, and we buy massive amounts of paper from Anchor, but I never realized they sold to the general public.  I would be very interested to stop in and see what they have!

Crafts Direct in St Cloud. The store is huge and they carry supplies for about any project you can think of. They also carry alot of good quality fabrics. Its worth the drive from the cities. There is also a quilt store/ yarn store nearby that I think is called Grubers.

Beadhive on Nicollet, and there is a new fabric store/sewing lounge around the corner.

Bead store on the top floor of the MOA.

Shops that sell crafted items include: Corazon (several locations), Shoppe Local, which burned down but I hope will rebuild. It's owned by the Patina folks, and I Like You in St Anthony Main.

I know this post is WAY old, but I was shocked to see that no one listed my absolute FAVORITE craft store:

Crafts Direct in Waite Park

Website: http://www.craftsdirect.com

It is the HUGEST craft store I have ever been to, they have classes on tons of different crafty subjects all the time, they have a buyer rewards program, and they accept all competitors coupons.  It's awesome-totally worth the drive if you don't live close.

Ax-man is a great store! A friend of ours took us there the other weekend and we ended up spending a good hour browsing, laughing at the little quibs they had posted all over the store and buying all the switch cords they had for next to nothing.  Smiley

If you are in northern MN go to Anderson Fabrics in Blackduck. They sell home dcor remnant's by the pound. They are cheaper than either SR Harris or Mill End.  They also have a regular quilt shop attached.
