So it's almost Easter.. which means time to start planning what Halloween costume I will be making.

The theme of my party (so far) is going to be Twisted Carnival/Circus.

So far I am thinking of making this pattern: http://www.mccallpattern.com/item/M3674.htm?tab=out_of_print/costumes&page=3 and being like a sexy ringmaster or magician/magician's assistant.

I also thought of something like a snakewoman (like from a sideshow/freakshow) would be cool, but that seems like it would be tricky to pull off.

But, I am up for more options! So please give me some ideas on costumes that fit the theme of Twisted Carnival or Circus. One caveat: no clowns!

Have you ever seen the show Carnival?  It was an HBO series, and very good.  It was certainly twisted.  It might give you some fun party ideas.  You could do a take on a gypsy fortune teller, or a lion tamer.  That could be fun.  Awesome idea for a party!

"Twisted Circus" has to be possibly my favourite theme, for books, pictures, stories, whatever.

K. America's Next Top Model did a sideshow photoshoot a few cycles ago, and here were the characters the girls portrayed:

Siamese twins
Giant lady
Rubber girl
Elephant girl
Bird lady
Strong lady
Bearded lady
Old face with a young body

Here's a YouTube slideshow of that photoshoot: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6vi9b7ERzg

I really like the idea of being a ringmaster... watch Across the Universe for a psychadelic circus scene, or Big Fish, which has a lot of circus themes and scenes in it.

Other sideshow things you could be:

Extra hands/extra arms etc.
Think of some physical malformities, haha

And some "regular" circus performers:

Aerialist (trapeze, aerial silks/tissus, aerial hoops, etc)
Acrobat (gymnast, concortionist, handbalancer, hand-to-hand)
Juggler (balls, pins, knives, contact juggling)
Fire performer
Animal tamer
Knife thrower

The possibilities are endless! Do some google and wiki searches for circus and sideshow/freakshow.

Can't wait to see you costume!

PS Here's my victorian zombie costume from last year. Might help you if you want to be an "undead" circus performer: http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=204397.0

Dom: "This guy was a nightmare to work with, the Balrog. He had a huge trailer, never came out, never bought a round when we went to the bar, do you remember?"

Billy: "Very rude."

I know this is a little late, but If you're still looking for ideas, there's a Halloween event down in Universal studios, FL every year. Last year's theme was "Carnival of Carnage". I know its a little different than what you were looking for, but there was a female clown there that you could use for a little inspiration.

I kissed a seal and I liked it.

LOL! love the theme, we are doing the exact same thing this year.

I am going to be the fortune teller and a clown after I have given all the party guests a reading. Our garage is being transformed into a big top and I will turn the furnace room into my gypsy cart. We have some of our guests performing acts like the strong man, acrobats, and Mad TV's Ms Swan as the tight rope walker. Other guests are coming as the tattoo lady, the bearded lady (a man), a lion and tamer, and conjoined twins (one skinny one heavy).
