I have been toying with the idea of trying amigurumi, but now I must!
This is one of the coolest posts I have ever seen on craftster. You and your bf are inspiring. This is so cool. You could totally make a book with these and Star wars and anything else nerdy amigurumi and I would buy it. As well as all my sci fi friends. and then you could be a millionaire!
YOU ROCK!!
ps- any tips for someone who is going to attempt their first amigurumi?

Well, I'll show a picture of one of the dudes without any clothes on-
to show you guys what they look like without hair and costumes and stuff. As far as the patterns go, I don't really have anything concrete, because every time I write something down and try to follow it, they turn out looking wonky. I have to improvise on each person, because of the different kinds of yarn I use and for other reasons I'm sure I can't fathom (maybe my aversion to stitch markers? lol)
I can say that I always have 5 straight rows in the body after the color change and always 3 straight rows in the head, but everything else I make up and change as needed.
As for tips, well, I'm probably not the most accomplished crocheter in the world, but amigurumi are pretty simple. I make these dudes from the bottom up to the top, and all you need to know is single crochet and how to increase and decrease. It is way easier than you think--if anyone is nervous about trying to make one, just go for it! I have ripped out more people that were too fat, too skinny, or WAY to huge to count, but they are small enough that it's not a big deal. Even after making this whole set (and a couple of other sets, too) I still make people that are the wrong size or have a wonky shape.
Also, when you stuff these guys, a multitude of sins are covered, so don't be worried about their shape until you stuff them! Sorry I wasn't able to be more helpful.
