I was wondering if someone could explain these directions to me please...

Transfer 9 (11) gusset sts to needles. Rejoin yarn at gap between hand and thumb gusset, pick up and knit 4 sts in base of 4 cast-on sts. Distribute 13 (15) sts evenly on needles and join for working in the round

Are you using double-pointed needles?  Have you seen knittinghelp (scroll way down to picking up stitches video)?

Basically you want to take the thumb stitches you put on waste yarn or a st holder and put them back onto the needles, pick up & knit across the gap (like in the video), then connect those 4 new sts to the ones you put back on needles by continuing to knit.

yes I'm using double point needles. I have looked at knittinghelp.com and understand the picking up stitches, but am confused as how to join the yarn again to be able to pick up the stitches...
