I certainly thought it was made with real stones, which is something I want to do at some point. But this is just so much more cool!

That turned out amazingly well. I would love to do that, but I don't think my miscellaneous ends of yarn have so many natural colors in them...

thanate, think about overdying! Check out the Craftster Dying Board for more info on how to dye these types of fibers.

I definitely second this idea. A lot of the little bits I have had been over-dyed as experiments. I included some brighter colors in the rug I made and I like how they look in there.

The more I look at the one I made my friend (it's on my floor waiting for delivery) the more I think I'll start working on one for myself. I'll take pictures along the way when I get on it.

wow, that is beautiful! How much yarn did you end up using? That is something i would love to try in the near future but I lack scraps that aren't acrylic. It would definitely be work buying loads of yarn specifically for such a project. I love it!
