Question about the gauge swatches in his book.

Okay, so i've never knit anything from a pattern except scarves. So i know gauge is very important (I had to frog a bikini bottom that i had been crocheting for months cus the gauge was all off)
Mkay.....enough rambling.
In the happy hooker book, and in most crochet books, it lists a row number and a stitch number. In the stitch n' bitch book, how do you know how many rows/stitches to make for the gauge swatch when only one number is listed?
Any help would be super welcome to this knitting noob trying to escape the scarf black hole.

I don't have it in front of me, but it's likely sts/inch or 4 inches because the pattern's probably asking you to work until it measures x inches, rather than giving you row counts.
