The linen with thread counts listed, like the stuff at Wyndham, is for counted-thread work, like cross-stitch and blackwork. High-quality linen for sewing should be fine for surface embroidery, I think -- and probably a lot cheaper! They definitely gouge a bit on the just-for-needlework fabrics.

You were thinking surface (or freestyle) embroidery, right, not counted cross-stitch?

Yes, just surface embroidery. I haven't done any serious embroidery in years, and other than a doll and a Holly Hobby sampler that I did when I was a kid, I've always embroidered to embellish other things as opposed to embroidering to showcase the actual stitchwork. And I am pretty sure that the doll and the Holly Hobby kit were just on plain muslin.

Do you think this one would do? It's not sewing linen, but I need to order some stuff and I'm trying to do it all from the same place to save on shipping.

I would try out this link  http://www.fashionfabricsclub.com/Catalog_items.aspx?Query=linen . They seem to have a good selection and reasonable prices.

Good Luck,

Jen
