Mermaid Slouchy Tam (with pattern!!)

Fate dictates that I must have this. I've been looking for stuff to knit for a festival I'm going to, someone suggested a tam and this was the first post I saw after that. And in the red and cream of the mittens I just made it's going to be awesome.

I'm fairly new to double pointed needles and I have a feeling I'd murder this beautiful hat if I tried to use them. I'm assuming the same thing could be done on 16" circs?
