My friend is going skiing for Spring Break and wanted to pay me to knit her a scarf.  I refused to take any money for it, but made her the scarf.  This took less than one skein of Bernat Alpaca Natural Blends in Peony.  I used US 10s and did 24 stitches across - 4 on each side in garter and the middle in stockinette.  The slit is 12 rows long and is outlined in Garter as well.  The whole thing is 30" long - just enough to tuck into a jacket.  I hope she likes it!

Thanks everyone!  I gave her the scarf yesterday and she LOVED it.  She wanted to pay me for it but I refused.  We settled on her buying me some chocolate - I think that's better than moola anyway!
