After my tea cozy, first sewing experiment (
here), I decided to be brave and make a fancy knitting roll for my partner as a gift.
I'm pleased with how it turned out but oh my god, the pain! I didn't have a machine yet, so I didn't really have a choice, but I figured it couldn't be too hard to sew the whole thing by hand.
Ha! Especially ha on the @nal-retentive stitches for the double layer of pockets.
It was definitely one of those projects that you start and get more than halfway through and then feel like you'll never be able to complete. Luckily, I did.
Anyway, it's a nice big size that still rolls down compactly, with various size pockets in two rows and a fold-over flap. I just sort of made up the pattern. I used a beatiful silky Liberty lawn fabric for the outer shell, black cotton for the inner lining, sturdy cotton duck for the pockets with ribbon embelleshing and a simple nylon string tie. There's also a layer of the cotton duck in between the Liberty and black cotton as a more pliable kind of batting/interfacing. It's nice in that it gives it some body without too much bulk.
Dimensions closed/tied are 15" tall by about 5" wide, thickness determined by how many needles are stuffed in there. Open with the flap folded, it's 24" wide x 15" tall and the flap is 5" long, so completely open, it's 20" tall. Pockets vary in width from 1" up to 6".
