My hometown is Garden City KS, home to the world's largest hairball.  It was taken from a cow when I was in High School.  Wet, it was 37" in circumference and 55 lbs.  Now it's 35" around and weighs 20 lbs.  It's one of my favorite things to mention about our town, I always suggest people go to see it.  When I saw this challenge I knew immediately that I'd like to make a little one.  I wanted to make it to scale, but that was tougher than anticipated.  It is 17.5 inches in circumference, and ideally would be 2.5 lbs, but it's a little bit light.  Did you know it's VERY difficult to get a large amount of flour into a balloon?  That was fun.  I crocheted it with black yarn and some brown "hairy" yarn that I had in my stash.

I hope you like it.  I really do.

That is bloody hilarious!  What a claim to fame!  In all honesty, I think it's inspiring that every little American town is able to find something--anything!-- special about itself and celebrate it.  Not to say that your town is tiny or insignificant, but neither it nor my own town is exactly New York City.

Have you ever seen Waiting for Guffman?  It's a very tongue-in-cheek movie about a small town that stages a musical about itself as the "Stool Capital of America" or something.  They have a factory that produces stools, but of course there's the double entendre on the word "stool" being a synonym for excrement.  Even though the movie is sarcastic, there's an element of affection for towns that can find something to celebrate in spite of the banality of their existence!

Great idea, and great execution!

I live in a Garden City too!

But mine is in Michigan. We have the first Kmart. Yours is definitely cooler!

All the times I've been to Garden City, KS (which is a LOT) I don't think I've ever seen a giant hairball.  You're little one is adorable though and gave me a good laugh!

Wow, I had no idea cows could get hairballs, let alone that they would be that big.  Guess I shouldn't be so hard on my cats.  Anyway, this is strangely very cute.

Hey, thanks everybody!

landofoz--it's in the museum down by the zoo.  You should definitely go see it.  At first they let you touch it, I don't know if they still do.  It felt like velvet...if you could get past the "This came out of a cow" grossness of it.

kriseob--I have seen Waiting for Guffman. Hilarious.  I love my little town too.
