So technically I am living in Virginia Beach, Virginia... but this challenge really left a lot of options open for me (lucky me!).
a) I am actually FROM NJ ... but I wasn't really inspired by my old town (sorry Jersey! Wink)
b) If you know the VB area, you know we're actually part of an area called Hampton Roads so we have 7 cities that we're part of and really could use
c) We're located so close to North Carolina, we might as well be in North Carolina.

I went with option c, but not really for the locality. I love the lighthouses that are in the area. There are some right in the city here, but the one I find my self most attracted to is the Cape Hatteras, NC lighthouse. It's a black and white striped lighthouse that actually had to be moved a few years ago because of beach erosion. It was successfully moved and protected from the beach it had been on since the late 1800's!

The lighthouse was actually built in Virginia and brought to North Carolina in the 1800's, so again it does tie the history of both states together.

If you want to read more about the history of this beautiful piece of art please visit this website!

And now onto my entry! Smiley

It measures approx 11in x 16in

I got a new sewing machine the other day and this is my first project on it (very pleased with the machine, by the way!)

I started by copying a picture of the lighthouse I found online, here is my drawing:

Here is my completed project. It's an appliqud/quilted wallhanging. There is a blue polka-dotted ribbon threaded through the top to hang it but I accidentally cut it out of the picture lol  Embarrassed

A close up to show that I actually layer the background fabrics because I wanted it to be funky and modern looking, not like a hokey "bathroom decor" lighthouse wallhanging. The front fabric is sheer and sparkley blue flower fabric. The fabric behind it is blue leopard print (thanks alwaysinmyroom!!)

I have to say I love the way it came out... this is one of the few times my project came out exactly how I pictured it! Now I just need to get a hang of the speed of my new machine and I'll be set! I'd love to hear what everyone thinks! Cheesy

Dude, I saw this on a teeny pic on the front page and thought "hey, the Cape Hatteras light!"  So, great representation.  I'm from Va Beach too, so I'll back you up on the "we're pratically the Outer Banks" thing.  Nice work!

I'm a Va Beach (First Colonial) native as well.  I was all excited when I saw "Cape Hatteras" in the subject line.  That's where alot us Beach natives go to get away from the tourists. Wink
Thanks for the sweet reminder of home.

You're very welcome. And I absolutely new just what it was from the thumbnail on the front page. You did an amazing job capturing Hatteras.

This pic is from 1999 when they were moving it from the shoreline, but you can see you nailed it perfect!

I walked up one of those things in the OBX. It nearly killed me, I knew what it was as soon as I saw the thumbnail. God, the view from the top is beautiful too.

What beautiful work! I love that lighthouse, we've been going there every summer since 1995 and take a family picture. Brings back lots of great memories.

Wow!  I was born in Newport News and raised in Hampton ... I lived there until December of 1998, when my, now ex-*** moved us to Seattle. I totally adore the Hampton Roads and Outer Banks areas! Great job ... I truly adore it!!  I have hand-drawn pictures of the Cape Hattaras light everywhere .. it is one of the most amazing pieces of history I've ever touched.   I am getting a new sewing machine in a few weeks. Which one did you get .. and do you love it?

I had to hit This Rocks .. because .. Chick .. this ROCKS!
