I've seen these done with Petit Danon yogurt drink bottles.  They even have a little bulge in them for the head and are already white so you can forgo the painting.

I'm SO GLAD to run across your post of the snowmen!  I posted my empty peppermint frappucino bottles on my blog recently b/c I wanted ideas for using the empty bottles.  I just could NOT bring myself to throw the bottles out.  SO I have a rather large collection of them in my pantry right this minute!
