I think I've discovered a new sport. Cable-doodling. Start with 4 cables and just wiggle them about at random through a piece. I started this with absolutely no plans at all and practically no cabling experience. I was aiming for a pretty random look and I love the way it's turned out.

I started about this time yesterday and finished about 2 hours ago.

the yarn is some really scrummy handspun from mandalinn on etsy. (http://www.etsy.com/view_transaction.php?transaction_id=7494492).

That's a cool idea.  I really like how it turned out.

I wish I had your free spirit, because I am in serious need of a cable-doodled head band right now.  Unfortunately for me the thought of knitting without everything written out beside me gives me axiety attacks.  I'm weak.  I wish I wasn't because I LOVE your headband.  How does it attach in the back?

Ah, just go for it! you'll have fun!

it's just sewn up at the back. the basic idea was starting off with 20 stitches, working a few rows of ribbing, then expanding out to 30 stitches for the cabley bit, then coming back to 20 stitches of ribbing.

there's absolutely nothing like just winging it to get your head round how a technique works.

Purty! That yarn does look nice and I think this is a great idea.  It reminds me of this pattern from Knitty: http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEwinter07/PATTbsjohnson.html

wow, i'm flattered! I've looked at the BSJ before and lusted after it but until I did this I didn't really understand cables so I didn't think I'd be able to tackle it, but now you've reminded me of it I might just have a go.
