So I'm making the beaded helmet from the fall issue of knit 1. It's pretty sweet-like a retro space girl hat.
This is the first knitting in the round project i've done so maybe i'm missing something but the directions say:
with dpns, cast on 12 sts and divide evenly over 4 needles. Place marker and join for knitting in the round. K 1 round.
Rnd 2 and all even rounds *K1, k1-bead; rep from * around.
Rnd 3 *k1 tbl, kfb; rep from* around---18 sts.
How is it i keep only having 16 stitches at this point? does joining for knitting in the round somehow make 2 extra stitches?
Please help! I really need a space girl hat.

Round 2 is where you are adding beads.
Round 3 you should be increasing 6 stitches (by knitting one stitch through the back loop and then the next stitch front and back making another stitch) and so after round three you should have 18.

Here let me write it out
Round 3 : K1TBL,  KFB, , K1TBL,  KFB, , K1TBL,  KFB, , K1TBL,  KFB, , K1TB,  KFB, , K1TBL, KFB,

You are increasing by one stitch with every stitch in red there are six stitches in red so 12+6 = 18

Unable to leave good enough alone!

Thanks! I realize now that commas are in the pattern for a reason. Doh!
