Purple glittery revamp for $2 school desk!

I finished this desk set today for my 5 yr old.  
     


It was supposed to be for Xmas but the weather wasn't great for painting.  It will be good to store all her craft bits and pens etc that usually clutter up the kitchen.
     
The desk is an old school one and was $2. They gave me a matching chair for free    I needed to sand out all the scratches and graffitti. The legs were an icky chipped institutional grey originally.  I already had old test pots with paint and after much searching I found the perfect girly paper for decoupage at the supermarket (hearts, flowers, butterflies, ladybugs.....).  The whole lot has three layers of glitter polyurethane (Fairy Dust).  It does not show up in the photos at all but there is a beautiful subtle shimmer over every surface.
The two shades of purple don't really show up in the pics - there is really much more contrast.

 

I've blurred out her name on the chair back.  I used a Celtic type font as a stencil and highlighted the name with silver.  The crown is a stencil I made from Word clipart.  The finishing touch will be some jewels glued on the crown.  I have some tiny ones but now think we need to get some much bigger ones!

Little Bee the new owner is very happy.  She loves purple, and now has somewhere to deal with all her imporant correspondence

Awww that is so cute...I just bought a house last year, and the lady left two desks like that in my basement...I left them cause I thought they would be fun to do something with when I eventually have kids...now I know exactly what I want to do...Great job!! You have given me inspiration...now I just have to make some kids... - all in good time I suppose!!!

Thanks for the nice comments.  It was a fun project and has been used a lot since we moved it to her room.  Even if you don't have kids these kind of desks would make fun storage fo suplies like beads etc.

If I had another one I would paint the top with blackboard paint, I think that would be fun for little (and big) kids.
