Does anyone know of a source where I can get lots of clock gears or cogwheels, preferrably steel? I've found some auctions on Ebay, but the bids get ridiculously high, and I think there must be a source that's less expensive. Any suggestions?

Have you tried a craft store, like hobby lobby? They're pretty cheap I think. Don't know if they have steel.

Check out SkyBluePink, I don't know if they are steel though. It looks like they may be brass:

I also just keep an eye open for cheap clocks anywhere I go. Then I can tear it apart and use the gears. Usually this is cheaper than buying the gears separately from craft stores.

I bought a huge lot on ebay.  I live outside the US so bulk is my friend.  I have no idea what I'll do with them all, as I bought more than 100 pieces;

I found a girl on Etsy, just today actually, who was selling gears, hands, and faces. I don't remember her account or have a link, but I'm sure you could just search for watch parts in the search field on Etsy.
