From John Kelso’s column in the Austin-American Fishwrapper… er Statesman:
This story started for me a few weeks ago when a guy who sounded about my age called up to say that over the years, he'd been in just about every beer joint in East Austin — except the Rio Rita at 1308 E. Sixth St., a few blocks east of Interstate 35.
He thought the place was too tough, so he stayed away.
Then, a few weeks ago, he finally got the cojones to walk into the Rio Rita, and what does he find? A group of people sitting around knitting.
Thursday night is crafts night at Rio Rita, which was taken over last March by new owners Randall and Donya Stockton, and transformed. It's gone from shivs to knitting needles.
On Thursday nights, you'll find knitters, crocheters, needle pointers and other crafters.
"To be fair, we probably have some of the toughest crafters in the city," Donya Stockton said.

If you’re not familiar, Randall & Donya are the owners of Beerland on Red River near 7th.

It's been a long time since I have posted.

Does anyone on here ever frequent "Arts and Drafts" on Thursday nights?  I was thinking about showing up after class one night, and was wondering if there is any Craftster representation...

I've been to an Arts and Draughts night.  It's really fun! I just brought my embroidery and chatted with people for a few hours.  I definitely recommend going, if you haven't gone yet!

I probably won't make it tomorrow due to cookout plans, but I'd like to venture forth to Rio Rita next Thursday (I suppose I have no excuse since I live in the neighborhood) to quench my curiosity.   Grin

Anyone else interested?

I'm interested (not for the knitting, since I don't knit, but for crafting community), but can't make it. Have fun w/out me!

Ok, tonight I'm going.  I'm free and have a paycheck!  Whoo-hoo.  I'll be in a black skirt with red cherries on it doing embroidery.  See ya.

Anybody know if this is still going on?

I am new to Austin and I don't know a single person but my husband!
