My First Dress Attempt... Ever ! Link to tute

Okies so I've never ever made a dress in my life, not for myself, not for a child, not even for a doll or Barbie; but i came across this tute and I just had to try one for my cousins 1 year old daughter...Tiny Happy's Tute here: http://tinyhappy.typepad.com/tiny_happy/2007/09/wrap-dress-patt.html

She made it look so easy, I just took the idea and sort of skimmed the text and winged it. No actual measurements, just a very general idea of what a 1 year old should measure (and the help of one of my son's old 1yr-old tees). It was all okay up until I tried to put ribbon on the armholes... I ended up cutting off ruffle sleeves from an old sleeping gown and adding them.. They have very light purple polka dots that match the ribboning, and then I made a ribbon flower with a button centre to cover up some of the stitching on the front.. I'm pretty happy with results, but having no sewing experience whatsoever (I jus woke up one day about 1 1/2 months ago and bought a sewing machine on the net), I've realized that I really need to learno how to make my seams pretty and my cuts clean,... and in general, I need to clean up the details. :S Comments please and tips also!




There were a few problems later though, it kinda slouches and opens in front, a button or something will have to be added... any tips?

This is very nice.  Your solution with the sleeve ruffles is just great, and the whole dress is very sweet.  The silky ribbon trim and sash make a great counterpoint to the plaid of the dress, and the little ribbon flower on the sash is very pretty.

Can you try the dress on the baby before deciding on a closure for the top of the front?  I would probably go with a snap at the bottom of the V of the neckline (on the inside) to keep the front closed up (not slouching open).

Thanks very much! Unfortunately it was the little darling's birthday today, and it was a surprise.. So i never even got to measure it on her, much less try it on.. And I ended giving it to her "as is"; But we sorta came up with the same idea with her mom except with a button or broach or something, though I think a snap would be really great! I think you just gave me the perfect solution, so I'll probably drop into town tommorrow and pick a few up staight away!

This is soooo adorable!!  I think that I have an idea now of my next project for my little 1 year old princess!!  I love the fabric and the colors you chose...you are doing a fabulous job of sewing!!  Keep up the good work!!!

Thankyou! Thankyou! I just love the stuff you guys do around here, and I so want to learn to sew well! I really need to clean up my seams and the details though.. But I'm so happy about the comments you've left me!
