I thought that not too long ago, someone posted asking what the technique is called where numerous small photographs are laid out to create one large image when looked at from further away.

Well, I was treating insomnia by surfing the net and I came across freeware that takes pictures and mosaics them into the picture of your choice.

Best yet.. there are PC and Mac versions!

I played with the Mac version a bit last night and it does take some time to generate the mosaic, but I know it's going to be one of my favorite toys.

The freeware can be found here:

Here's my first attempt at playing with this program:

The picture source is a CD of images from NASA.

I need to get a better handle on the controls to adjust the pictures once they are all placed.  Also, this image is pretty fuzzy due to the low resolution I used to not be a memory hog, but the original image is a sharp high res.

The bad news: There is no key to happiness.
The good news: It isn't locked.

 Awesome mosaic!
I downloaded this program and next thing I knew it was three hours later! Wow!
It takes longer when you try to use only your own photos.

Yes, that software sucks up time like a black hole!  It's fascinating to see it work, but really easy to get lost into.  But it's worth the fun.
