DIY watercolor frisket?

Hioya! So I want to do some watercolor pieces with some big blocked out shapes, and I normally use a store bought frisket, but I want to do some really big shapes and I need a more cost effective (and hopefully with less toxic fumes) solution. I can't really use a scissor right now because my hand is in a cast, so stickers and things are out. Maybe rubber cement? Anyone have any experience with watercolor blocking mediums? Any thoughts would be super appreciated!

Frisket is made of latex - that's why it doesn't really adhere and then comes up when you rub it. Rubber cement is MADE to stick to paper, so it won't come up when you need it to. I would try paper frisket. It's mostly used for airbrushing because it can be cut out like a stencil and then stick-paint-peel. It's tacky, but not too tacky and you can get it in permanent or removable varieties.

  You can find liquid latex at costume supply places (used to make scars and wounds and wrinkles and such).  Get it real cheap if you wait till halloween then you find the stuff everywhere for next to nothing.

Oh that's interesting, I used to keep liquid latex around for 3D projects, but that makes a lot of sense! Great idea, thanks!

just a tip,  if you have large ares you need blocked off,  you can do just the edges, and a little way in so to save yourself some money on frisket.   you don't really need to wash pain all over the frisket to get the effects you want on the paper.

I've never tried using rubber cement as a frisket before, but if you are just worried out the taking off part get yourself a "rubber cement pick up."  They should have them any fine art store (like dick blick or utrecht), I'm not so sure about art's and crafts store like Micheal's and such....But they are just these little rubber squares that you rub over the rubber cement and well...it picks it right up!  Good luck!

When masking large areas, I cut a rough shape out of paper, and then use masking tape around the edges. I only use frisket for small areas.
