I love both bags!! Those little side handles are a perfect addition.  I'll have to scour the response pages to see if you posted a pattern when I have a little time.  This is one of the nicest shopping bags I've seen.  Thanks for sharing.

No, the ones I made for Dad, the fabric was so thick that they didnt need it.
The hippo one is lighter weight, its ok for me, but I think some may prefer it with interfacing.
I guess it depends on the thickness of the fabric you are using, and how you want it to look.
Hope that helps

Hi!
Thanks for the lovely comments Smiley

re how I made it

The bag is the infamous "Jordy bag" with some slight modifications.
The bag itself is two rectangles, 52 cms by 88 cms with a 1cm seam allowance.
The rectangles cut out of the sides are 21cm by 10 1/2 cms.
I used one of these rectangles to make the 2 loops.
I cut it in half length ways, then folding the sides to the middle, zigged zagged both sides down.
Then folding in half again and top stitching.
I dont pull the bag inside out from the base seam, I leave a part of the top of the bag open, pull through and topstitch the entire bag, making the seam invisible.
I make my handles the same way I made the loops, except I pin instead of zigzaging.
Just cut your handles the length you want plus a tucking in allowance, four times the width you want them.
Hope thats helpful!

Ive been thinking of making a larger one for lighter objects, like cereal packets and tissues ect.
My dd has asked for 4 hippo bags, as a matching set  Grin

back to the sewing machine
take care!

I love love this bag.  Your choice of fabric is great and very appealing  Adorable.  This has been on my wanna do list for too long.  Thank you for the measurements in cm.  I'd love to try to figure this one out.  It is big and I love the flat bottom.  I've been using too many plastic bags even though I use them later for garbage (instead of buying garbage bags).  Perfect size and I love the way you turned it inside out then sewed.  Thank you.

lol, may be hard to steal them, my dd is snapping them up tomorrow!
No, I didnt put a hard base in, though you could, I was aiming for something that just squished up when not in use.
Im not sure how long they take to make, I cut them out while I watched tv last evening,
and sewed them up today in 15 minute breaks from cleaning the house, etc.
(Im a big fan of Fly Ladys 15 minute cleaning plan)
I guess they dont take much longer than 15 mins once they are cut out and the handles ironed flat, ready to sew.
I went to Spotlight, hoping to get some cute fabrics, but was not hugely inspired.
Guess its a trip up to Ikea, oh poor me, lol!
Thanks a bunch

I'm a 15 minuter too!!  I have to wait until I do the kid's "school time", but then I'm 15 minutes cleaning, 15 minutes sewing.  Usually starts sometime after lunch.

Hi hun....what lovely bags.....are you in Oz too?  Ikea sell fabric do they?  Now that's dangerous!  Although, the nearest one to me is like a 40 min drive away and Spotlight is 5 mins away...guess where I spend my time (and too much cash!)? lol  I'm thinking you're the craftster who told me that Spotlight had the 'Moo" material a while back....got some thank you!  Thanks also for posting the pattern in cm's I know how to convert from " to cm, but it's way easier when it's already done!

Hugs
Naomi

P.S. If dd decides to share her 4 bags....I'll have one! J/K

Missed this the first time around (Dad's bag), but I'm glad you're back for a return appearance.  I really like that there are both short handles and long handles on the bags.  Sometimes you need one and sometimes you need the other.  When I'm carrying something really heavy, I don't want it hanging off my shoulder.  But I'm happy to carry it in my hand.

Kudos to you!

thankyou for all the lovely replies!

I had a chuckle thinking about the boy who may lose his pillowcase to his mum for a bag, hehe.

And yes, now that Ikea has opened their new store, here in WA, they sell fabric!
Oh happy, happy day. Grin
All the fabric used in the bags, and in the apron
http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=228495.msg2480241#msg2480241
where bought from Ikea.
The hippo and animal print were a bargain, only about 8 or 9 dollars (AU) for a small bolt of each.
I got 5 lined bags out of that.

Ok I have just bought my first Burda mag, I cant seem to buy Ottobre anywhere locally.
Am off to decipher a wee jacket,
wish me luck!

oh and I made a quick bag for tafe, at midnight last night, as you do, I havent posted the pics of that one yet!

I am hoping that I can follow your measurements and make some bags.  I am so sick of plastic bags.  I cringe at them. All the stores are starting to sell reusable shopping bags for about a buck each but I would rather go styling to be honest with you so I need to get in to the groove here and make some of these babies!

I am copying & printing your measurements then I am going to copy and print the jordy bag directions since that one is not one I have done yet either....

It sure would be great to go green for a change!

I love the bags, and the parade of hippos on your counter just makes it even better!  I'm a canvas bagger, but I have yet to make one (shocker, I know, seeing how this is, uh, Craftster).  The long handles are great for carrying but not so great for the checkers who like their plastic bag holder.  I usually buy my bags as souvenirs from places I've been.  That and squished pennies.

And whoever asked about looks/comments from checkers, I have yet to notice any negative response.  I just make sure to toss them down as I'm loading my groceries on the conveyor belt so they don't get all jumpy and start putting my stuff in plastic bags.  I actually stopped shopping at Vons because they don't offer a bag discount.  There's several grocery stores in my area, so it wasn't much of an effort to switch.  I know it's only 5 cents, but it's more the idea than the money for me.
