I would surf the reconstructed clothes forum, and look for things made form old ripper or torn clothes that may inspire a project. I've had kids go NUTS over making bags and purses out of ripped jeans.

You could make recycled magazine beads http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art15826.asp or paper stars http://www.creativekidsathome.com/activities/activity_120.shtml
or origami out of magazines or newspaper

Hmmm...I've remade an old pillowcase into a cute tote. Very simple. Girls will love it. EveryoneI know adores mine. You could make lots of things with bottle caps. Get old pieces of wood and paint them. Let dry, modge podge on a picture, and a cute quote, then seal. Ive been dying to do that. Pop tabs can be fun. cardoard boxes can be decorated and made into shelves. They could make reusable cloth sandwixh bags. I love those. I have a leopard one.  Grin
Also, There is a tutorial for making a rug out of plastic bags on here that I have been dying to do. Can't think of anything else right now.
