I would use a translucent mesh/net fabric on the inside to glue to the buttons, much the same way as small Mosaic tiles are adhered to a mesh.

This is a beautiful work or art, and I can see why you are worried!  But on the other hand, I would think if it broke, super glue could put it back together with some new buttons.

Just enjoy its beauty and don't worry!
