I know this is an old thread, and you may have long since given up on this hat, but I think I've figured out where you might have had trouble.
I make this hat all the time, since I have 21 nieces and nephews (I always know at least one pregnant person!), and this project travels well.
I think you probably should have knitted 48 stitches, before you began purling across the front. The way the rounds have worked for me is that the first purl round extends the 30 cast on stitches by 5 on each side. Then you do a knit round. The next round has the purl stitches 4 on each side, then getting one less, etc., etc.
Maybe that will help? I will post my photos of a couple of the hats I haven't yet given away. Soonish. I also made an adult-size one for myself, that I wear all the time. I'll post a photo of that, too. I never add the eyes or whiskers, because I think that the baby's eyes and nose do the job just fine.
I hope you get a chance to pick it up again.

Aw, very cute!

I'm  having a go at this for a little Alice too. I think I'm mostly OK so far (I never follow patterns properly anyway) but I'm working on DPNs and I HATE DPNs so it's just sat there waiting for me to get two circs of the right size.

Alice is a cutie! The hat looks good, too! I'm sure people compliment her all the time.

Here are a couple pics of me in my grown-up sized hat. I used a bulky-weight variegated wool yarn with size 8 dpns. The ears have some bulky merino I had left over from another project. I'm sure it's a little goofy, but most of the people who know me wouldn't expect anything less. They've actually suggested putting wire in the ears, so I can shape them. Maybe next hat.

I wish the lighting was a little better on the first one, but oh, well!
