So i worked at the swap o rama rama at austin's maker faire this year. The store i work for, craftorama, had a booth where we helped people take clothing donated from goodwill and make it into something new. So during my downtime i decided that i wanted to make a rug out of tshirts! My mom used to crochet rugs out of long strips of fabric so i figured why not do it with tshirts!

I cut the tshirts spirally creating the longest strip of fabric i could, about 1.5 inches wide. I used a q hook i believe, it was a fellow workers hook so i cant remember for sure. But the thing was huge, and glittery! The rug was made with all single crochet so that it would be pretty dense.

thanks! The strips were 1.5 inches wide by varying lengths. It just depended on the size of the tshirt, i'd say that the average length of strip was maybe 21 feet? That's a rough estimate. You can see some of the lengths of colors are a lot shorter because i used tank tops or small shirts because i wanted the color!

Yay Austin!  I would have stopped and commented, but my fiance was rushing me away from all the pretty crafts so I wouldn't buy anything.  Roll Eyes

I love it!  It's sort of funny, I just finished a rug crocheted from old t-shirts too.  Didn't your  hand hurt after cutting all those strips?  I had a few blisters after I finished. I got a few strange looks in the thrift store too when I would start cheering when I'd find long ugly t-shirt dresses  Embarrassed.  It's worth it though, it make such a soft, cushy, adorable rug.
