I am presuming you didn't write the pattern either.  The blanket is just stunning and I have a coworker who will have a baby in a couple of months.  It looks like the branches are i-cord because they are so puffy, but I don't if that would work?  Anyways, it is absolutely gorgeous beyond belief (and I love tree of life stuff).

As far as needles.  I learned on straights but I primarily do all my knitting on circulars now.  As you know, you aren't missing anything with the straight needles.

That's really pretty and almost enough to make me want to do knitting again. I always liked cables and similar more than more basic stuff, never tried it freestyle though.
