I've decided to do a series of 12 prints for the 12 animals of the Chinese Zodiac. The Chinese calendar is luni-solar (uses both cycles of the moon and the sun) so New Year varies from late January to early February according to the Western Calendar. The cycle begins with Rat (and Chinese New Year was last week: February 7, 2008). Ox was supposed to be first, but crafty Rat hitched a ride on his back and jumped the queue.

Here are my first three.

Da shu: The Rat: The Big Mouse

Niu: The Ox

and
Hu: The Tiger

I'll keep posting on this thread as I continue. It's like a craft-along of one. Wink Hope you enjoy!

Those are really good. Did you draw them yourself, or just copy/carve?  Can't wait to see mine -lol- rabbit.

Thanks Phizzy!

Thanks ingysoup. I drew the animals, carved the blocks and printed them. I looked at a lot of Chinese art for inspiration (and looked up the characters), but they came out of my own head. Rabbit's up next!

Hi balkandina, and thanks!

The rat is printed on paper 9" (22.9 cm) wide and 6.25" (15.9 cm) tall.
The ox is printed on paper 9" (22.9 cm) by 13" (31.8 cm).

I forgot to measure the tiger, but I think it's 6" (15.2 cm) by 13 " (31.8 cm).

Those are really nice! I love the look of linoleum. The rat is probably my favorite so far, I like that it has a bit of sketchyness in it and that the background isn't all white. Can't wait to see the other ones Grin

The rat is really cool.  I've been away for awhile but there are so many cool things being made, I'm going to have to come back at least once a week.  I like the tiger too.  That's my Chinese sign.  Thanks for sharing.

Awesome job.  I like lino prints.  Did it last semester with a Buddha motif.  (Prof said it didn't look serene, but serene is SO subjective, so there!)

Do you intend to sell some of your prints?  If so, could you please PM me? That'd be most awesome, as my bf is a rat (LOL!) and my lil sis is a tiger.

Thank you Phyxious, beansteam and jessers!

Phyxious- I took my boyfriend's advice and didn't carve away all the lino for the rat. I like that it give a sort of woodcut feel to the print. The rabbit will also have some sketchiness in a similar way.

beansteam- I'm a tiger too. Wink

jessers- will PM. Smiley
