Ok gals,
I just brought home a garage sale find... a new wheel!!!

There are no markings on this wheel (photo to come) but I think it is in pretty good shape. My friend that found it for me knows a bunch about spinning and stuff, but she's not here right now and I have questions!!!!

So, I know where the yarn is supposed to feed from my hands to the spinny-winder part. I know where the pedal is and how to use it. Is that all I need to know to get started. Just pedal and draft? Then when the winder thingy gets full I'll have more questions, but I really really really want to get started and I want to make sure I don't get immediately frustrated. Smiley
Thanks!

Hey, congratulations on the wheel!!! Pedalling and drafting, yeah, that's pretty much it! At the beginning a problem many people will have is that the wheel either pulls too much or not at all, so you'll have to play around a bit with the tension...

Have fun!

Ok, I'm a little stuck and both of my spinning friends are not answering the phone! UNBELIEVABLE! Smiley
Anyway, so, the thing that spins and winds the yarn (spindle?) has 6 hooks on it. Kim, my friend who go the wheel for me, started some yarn for me and it was wound on the spindle, I know it is supposed to be fed through that hole and come out the other side where I do my drafting, but how do the hooks play in? Am I supposed to thread it over the hooks first, or one hook or are the hooks there to intimidate me!?!? GAH!

Yep, the yarn goes from your drafting hands through the orifice (hole), threads over the hooks on the flyer (spinning and winding part), and winds onto the bobbin.

There are several hooks so that you can wind onto one area of the bobbin for a while, then move the yarn to another hook and wind onto another area.  This helps the yarn distribute evenly over the bobbin.  Make sense?

If you have a total of 6 hooks, that means there are 3 on each side.  Some flyers have 3 hooks on the left facing up while the 3 hooks on the right face downward.  Other flyers have all of the hooks facing up.  Just depends on your wheel.  If you have the former, always thread the yarn through the hooks on the left.  If you have the latter, you can switch between the left and right hooks.

I have no idea what you're talking about, so here's me with some yarn on my head.
