In December, my son's daycare director saw a little Santa doll I made for my 2 year old. She asked my partner, "Oh, do you think she'd make us a nativity set for the kids to play with?" "Oh, sure!" my partner said, "DeAnna just knocks these things out left and right!"

(Did you all just cringe with me? Thank you.) But I was actually quite happy to do it, and so of course this turned into a project that has taken over my life over the past four weeks. I have probably spent 60 hours on this -- a couple hours here and there in the evenings and MANY hours each weekend. I'm delighted with how the project turned out, but not as happy with the photos. I think I need to make a light box to do it right.

So here is the story:

As shepherds

were watching their sheep

(I may make a few more so they have a respectable flock)

an angel appeared before them

and said, "Go see the baby. And his mom and dad."

"You will know them by their very tired donkey."

"You will find the baby lying in a manger lined with Fun Fur."

Three kings arrived.

I guess they could all fit on one camel.

They brought gifts.
(I made a box of gold (Glitterspun yarn), a silver bucket-y type thing, and a lame basket of some peach yarn, as if frankincense is peach ... I think I'm going to re-do the lame basket, so just picture something cool. What I made isn't as cool as what you're thinking of.)

And then a giant attacked!

I've never done a big project like this before, and I would love feedback! Thanks for looking!

FANTASTIC!

But I think the wise men need at least one more camel and the shepherds do need a few more sheep.

I really like the robes you have on the wise men, the colors are great.

Thank you so much! I think (and hope) you're right -- the kids will enjoy playing with them. Right now my son likes to do a mash-up where Santa visits a few of them, which is hilarious. (I am so going to hell.)

WOW!  Not only is this awesome, but your story is hilarious!

I LOVE your sheep... a fibre fan's bias, no doubt!

If you can, and you're ambitious/interested enough, I'd suggest making some sort of bottle-type thing for your frankincense... 'cause if all else fails, you could say "it's in there"  ... whether it's like I Dream of Jeannie or more urn-like, I'm sure it'd make sense.

no you aren't Smiley When I was a kid we went to Midnight Mass one year, as communion was winding down Santa walked in, took communion, then paused and knelt at the huge nativity set up in front before waving & leaving. We kids got it, Santa is a Christian too.

I love the donkey, the sheep is precious and the kings are fantastic! I agree the shepards need a whole flock.

I love the line "in a manger lined with fun fur"!

That is right out of the original Greek translation of the Book of Matthew. It seems the Innkeeper (oh! I should add an Innkeeper!) loved to crochet.

Oh, you're so right! Sunday school flashback! I ended up with the box of gold, then last night finished a silver sort-of I Dream of Jeanie-ish, well, cookie jar with a loop for a handle, and then a red sack tied up with a silver rope. So it's believable that the cookie jar has a liquid, and the bag has a solid.

I love the story of Santa taking communion!

And can I vote for more sheep? I love how cute he is!

I was reading through the Christmas story, admiring your creche pieces when I got to this line. I burst out laughing so hard I woke up my dog from her sound sleep!
Great job! I need to create something like this for the nursery at our church - I'll probably use cotton so it could be washed periodically for sanitary reasons. Thanks for the inspiration!
