Sock Dog Birthday Gifts

My New Year's Resolution is a little different. I am going the whole year buying only resale. Thought being, there is enough stuff on the planet now for a person get by on, without making new stuff. Ok, the big exceptions are groceries and any emergency items I might need for home repair or auto. No, a wedge needle for my sewing machine is not a necessity. As much as I want one right now....

My first real challenge has been birthday gifts for the many children in the herd of families my daughter and I run with. I decided to make them all sock doggies. There were 5 birthdays in January alone! I had a big bag of polyfill and once I told people about the project, they started giving me socks.

One dog got gifted before getting his picture taken. The film canister is a stash 'barrel' that I give cash, movie money or small trinkets in. Here's a very pink one and some other angles of the doggies.


I found the directions in Martha Stewart kids magazine a few years ago. Here is a link to an online version. I pretty much am making them exactly as you find this tutorial, too many to make to experiment right now. The only thing that I am doing differently is sewing closed the face before attaching it to the body.

These are stupid easy to make, and I'm getting them done faster too. A month in, I have succeeded in avoiding my usual retail haunts and actually have saved some money as an added bonus! (plus, the kiddies love them)
