Haha! Yes a heat gun will work! I actually only use the hair dryer for crafting Same as the curling iron, which I got from a friend and used for ribbon.

I don't have neither a hair dryer nor a heat gun. I have been thinking that I should buy one of them, but I'm not sure which I should buy. I don't need to dry my hair, but some kind of heating tool would be handy in crafting.

Then about crackling: I don't know proper words in English, so I'm not sure if you're going to understand the following. I have done crackling couple of times, but on sturdy surfaces like wood. I have used that stuff which is like invisible paint. You know, the stuff you put on top of the paint layers to protect the paint. You need two kinds of that stuff, one has to be water soluble (dryes quickly) and the other has to be that kind that is used with some other thinner. First you paint or collage or whatever you want to do, then you put a layer of non-water soluble thing over it, wait ½-2 hours and put a layer of water soluble thing on that. The longer you wait with the water soluble layer, the bigger the cracks will be.  Then you have to wait till next day. After that, you can rub some paint to the cracks to make them more visible if you want to.

Heini -- the invisible paint is called varnish.  Your description was very clear and easy to understand.  Your method sounds really interesting.  I'm going to print out the directions and save them!

If you do decide to buy a heat tool for crafting, I would recommend a heat gun over a hair dryer.  It's more expensive (at least in the US), but the heat gun doesn't blow, so you don't have to worry about blowing your papers away.

i've been tempted to play around with crackling, so it's awesome to have multiple ways to do it!


my heat gun is actually from the hardware store, it's made for paint stripping (i borrowed it from my sister). it might be heavier duty than the ones sold specifically for crafts, but it works well for me!
